Thread-locker on valve cover bolts.

So I have this 1998 GTP coupe. I went to change the oil about a week ago and noticed that the engine was getting kinda oily. It had not reached the bottom of the oil pan yet, but seemed to be coming down the sides. The first thing I thought of was this valve cover gasket recall that I have not had done yet. I looked under the front valve cover and could see wetness from oil. Okay, time to replace the valve cover gaskets. So the next day I do the job. Looked it up in the GM service manual, went and got the gaskets from Autozone ($58). It took me some time. Had to remove a belt and some pulleys, upper dogbone motor mounts. Tilt engine forward, etc. It really was not that bad of a job. I torqued the bolts to 10 nm. Put it all back together and then went in and read the service manual one more time and noticed the comment I did not see before. Use thread locker on the bolts. What have I got myself into here? Anyone else not use thread locker? Thanks.

I did a LIM and fuel injector job on my 3.1 2000 GP last year and didn't use thread locker on the valve cover bolts. Just torqed them to specs and haven't had a problem.

No problems here either. On the L67 and L36 engines the valve cover bolts go through a rubber grommet so that helps.

Your comments are encouraging. I know I could re-do the job in a few years, if I have to. Thanks.
