Thanks for your ideas on this problem.. I have a 1999 5.7 that has an oil leak by the filter. The leak is between the block and housing that the oil filter spins on to. It has 3 or 4 bolts and i did tighened them up. It slowed the oil leak but did not stop it. I want to replace the gasktet but did not know what parts will fall out when I remove the housing. I looked in the repair manual I have, but not word one on the housing or whats up there. Is the oil pump up there? Is there springs and parts that could fall out? Thanks again for the help.. Dave

I believe that this is an O ring and gasket,,,this housing is where the filter is mounted,,,remove housing and remove all oil from surface mounting of gasket ,,then place new O ring and gasket ...

could also be rear main seal,,,give this a try first..

OK, found this, tracked it down. Fel-Pro ES72671. What this is: it's the gasket kit / O-rings used when a tow package (front external oil cooler) is added to GM engines in trucks and SUVs. So it's called oil cooler seal kit, even though it's not on the oil cooler itself. Part number is Fel-Pro ES72671, and it's even available at AutoZone and Checker/Schucks/Kragen/O'Reillys for $10. After removing the oil filter, the adapter can be removed by removing two allen-head screws, with 1/4 inch allen wrench in a 1/4 inch socket. You won't use all the parts in this kit.

I just replaced this on my 1994 Suburban, a few years after the mechanic had done it for me, his fix lasted only a few years. Note: oil will drip all over you when you do this job, better if you let the oil drain a few hours. One of the allen head screws may be longer than the other.

Thanks for the info.. mine has 1/2 inch bolts (4 i think) that holds the oil filter block on to the engine block. Next week I will pull it apart and replace the o ring or gasket. Dave
