Auto shutdown relay problems on 98 intrepid 3.2l?

Hey guys...my car started dying as it came to a stop. It wouldnt start as it made a clicking noise from under the hood along with a knocking noise and a noise that sounded like a poss electric fuel pump. I tracked the clicking to the auto shutdown relay under the hood and switched the relays out and it started with no problems. I put the old one back in and the clicking and knocking noise continued as i tried to start it and then a complete power loss. I switched the relay back and it started with no problems. I cut it off and started it again and it then it started doing the same thing as the old relay...anybody have any ideals?
