Remote Keyless Entry Programming

I have a remote that needs to be programmed on an 06 grand prix gt. I've gathered from several sources that this can be done without a scan tool. Can anyone provide any info to confirm or deny this? Thanks in advance for your help.

What sources? Any links? GM Tech 2 scan tool only needed last time I checked.
