99 Grand Am GT. What would happen if you overfilled the Coolant Resevoir?

The reason I ask is that it was empty today and after refilling it, then checking the engine after driving a short distance I lifted the hood and there was a hole in the top of the hose on the right side of the engine where coolant sprayed under the hood. (sorry I dont know the name of it im a girl)

So what im trying to figure out is if I caused the hole by overfilling it a month ago. (it wasnt empty then) Or if the hole occured and caused the reservoir to flush out empty.

PS the car was not overheating but it was running 5-10 hotter than normal and that made me check the coolant and I could also smell it.

Timeline

1.A month ago - checked reservoir and added coolant
2.the last 3-5 days running hotter than normal but not overheating and smelling collant
3. Refilled empty reservoir, drove short distance, smelled coolant, searched the engine and saw hole. I didnt search the engine before so im not sure when the hole first occured.

I also know theres a line on the tank and I didnt fill it to the top. but i might have gone above the line because its hard to tell where its filled to

it is called " the upper radiator hose" and you can do it yourself.

use pliers to squeeze the metal clips together and pull them down the hose. Do this on both ends. You will probably need smaller screwdriver to go under the hose to break the seal formed by coolant and heat deposits.

also you are lucky since this is the cheaper one comparing it to the lower radiator hose. Don't forget to put coolant.

It could have just been time to go with the hose, they dont last forever. The cooling system does build up a lot of pressure so any weak spots can go anytime..

Over filling will usualy just blow it out the overflo no biggy.
Sometimes it can actualy blow out more coolant then needed and make it low again when it cools down.

About how hot is it getting, how many marks over 1/2 way on the temp guage?

Thanks

As to how far past the half

1-2-3 marks at the most. It started to waffle between half and these 3 points which triggered me to check it.

I would say up to 3/4 of the gauge is acceptable depending if it is very hot outside and if you are stuck in a city traffic. For example in Chicago, bumper to bumper traffic on a hot day will raise needle up to 3/4 which is normal. If you see needle going very close to red turn on the heat to max, and look to park somewhere asap.

Its in the shop, I was gonna try it myself but there was no way for me to reach the bottom part of the hose and clamp.

I did remove the reservoir tank and clean that out though.

Ok the car is back from the shop with a new hose, Im not sure if he bled anything or did some of those things you guys talk about.

But I can say that the car gets hotter when I sit at a red light. Granted, its only up to 3 places past the middle then goes back down when I start driving. The thing that bugs me is that it never did that before. the temp before all this seemed more stable.

Is there something else wrong here?
