I need some Mazda help. I run a shop at my house, and I have a 98 Protege that was towed here with a no start condition. Customer states he hit a pothole, it died, now it won't restart. Here is what I have done so far. I have spark to plugs. Checked for power to main relay it is there. Tried 2 different distributors no luck. What I have found is the injectors are not firing. Fuel pump runs when key is in cranking position. When I release key car will attempt to start, but instantly dies. I have a noid light on the injectors when cranking engine over noid will flash, but as soon as key is released light stops flashing. I replaced the ecm today with a good used unit, and still have same problem. According to the Mitchell repair manual on this car, when you turn ignition to crank position it activates the ground circuit to the fuel pump allowing fuel to pressurize, then when engine goes over 50 rpm ecm takes over and grounds pump through it, but it is not clear if that is the same for the injectors. Further testing has revealed that spraying starting fluid will start car, and it will rum as long as you spray fluid in, but as soon as the fluid is burned up it dies. I can ground out injector with key on and it will spray fuel. i have checked continuity between the ground wire from injector to ecm and wire is good. Has any one seen this, and do you have a solution. If you have questions about this please feel free to ask, I know I have put a lot of info on here and have probably confused some so please ask, I need help.

If they hit a pothole and it died, maybe it rattled the converter apart and it is plugging up the exhaust. Maybe try dropping the front pipe away from the manifold. If it works, they are going to need both converters as the front one usually clogs up the rear one when it breaks apart.

Thanks for the reply but if you read the entire post I said it will run on starting fluid, so I woul think that eliminates convertor problem. Today I tried another ignition switch, didn't help either. Bottom line conclusion I have come to is injectors are not firing properly to alow engine to run.

Check on the bottom of the engine, the crank pulley. See if the CPK mount has been bent or the sensor is out of position. Make sure the wiring harnesses for the crank and cam position sensors haven't come undone. It sounds like one of two things: The computer isn't telling the injectors to open, which would indicate damaged or disconnected sensor. The other possibility is that the fuel line was damaged (dented, crimped) and the engine is starving for fuel. I doubt it's the latter though.
