Hello all,
I am building a model in a another forum for a group build contest. The contest is theme based in that each group chooses their theme for the build. On my team our theme is to build a full drift race car. So i thought that I would share with all of you as well of what I am building for this contest.
My kit will be Tamiya’s Toyota SARD Supra GT.
This kit will serve as the foundation for me to build a drift spec racer.
Some modifications will include:
-Modified 2JZ-GTE engine from Tamiya’s Toyota Supra (street spec) kit
-Engine bay detail
-Slight body modifications
-Aftermarket wheels (though I have yet to decide on which)
-And other modifications that have yet to be determined
Hope you all enjoy....
When I build models my favorite part is the engine bay. With that being said I tend to spend a lot of my time and efforts in detailing the engine and the surrounding areas. As some of you may be aware, the SARD Supra is a curbside kit and as I had said before I will be building a modified 2JZ for my drifter. So the following is what I have done so far to get the engine bay ready.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2645/3843732087_fe1f1d939d.jpg
The first thing I started with was fit the 2JZ into the SARD Supra. The 1:1 SARD Supra actually has a twin turbo inline four for the motor which the bottom of is depicted in the model. So modification was made to the chassis to accept the inline six of the 2JZ. I will have to scratch build some new motor mounts and steering components latter.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2580/3843730821_8815aa15f5.jpg
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3473/3844519352_9b71fcf73b.jpg
So with this kit being a curbside, I needed to cut the hood. After debating for a long time of where the cuts should be, I went ahead and made them.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2480/3844518272_8c32d8993c.jpg
With the hood cut out I wanted the engine bay to look more accurate, so I decided to cut the engine bay borders out of the street version. Once that was cut out I trimmed down the piece until it would fit properly.

Here is the engine bay mocked up with all the pieces as well as the hood from the street version. Some filler will be used to clean up the edges of the engine bay and make everything seem like one. I also mounted the front fenders.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2463/3844511100_f6ba61f5f4.jpg
And finally two questions that I have for you all.
One, I still am debating on what kind of rims to use, these are one that I have in mind. The other option is to order some aftermarket wheels, just need to figure out which ones. What do you think?
Secondly, I’m trying to think of what would be better for a wing. The wing that came with the SARD kit, or a GT wing?
Thanks for checking in and comments are always welcomed

that looks awesome man, im actually doing the same exact thing with my sard supra as we speak.... only thing that sucks is that i dont have (dont really want to cut apart a tamiya supra just for parts) spare tamiya supra to cut apart, so what im doing is scratch building the engine panels to my best ability, the hood was a paint in the ass to cut open, so damn thick.
and the hoods are a DIRECT replacements, its awesome :)
im also putting in a 2jz from the tamiya into this one, but mine will be a street version.
i am however using the sard engine as a basis for a scratch-built 2jz engine for my drag race supra.
im definatly going to keep an eye on this thread, great start so far man.

Im pretty sure that they closed the entries, but not a hundred percent on that. If I were you I would pm m1cro and ask him. Maybe he can work something out, but I dont know.

Nope, the teams are set now so unfortunately no new members can join.
Excellent work on the Supra by the way. I would never have thought to swap over the street Supra parts.

Hello all,
I thought that I would post pictures of the wings that I am debating over. The first two are with the SARD wing the other two are with a GT wing. I am kind of leaning more towards the SARD wing, though i might use a different GT if I go that route.
You can also see what my plans are for the hood as well!!! :evillol:

the sard wing is nice, but not really drifter type... you need a different type of GT wing as this one makes the supra look wayyy to ricey
nice progress though, cant wait to see it done

I kinda like how it looks in your opening post...wingless. If your set on having a wing, maybe cut down the SARD one to a lower profile.

I would trade the mesh you have in the hood for some HO scale rail road chain link fence. It is actually made just like the mesh that you would use on a real car (expanded metal) and the holes are considerably smaller.
on the left top you see the HO scale "fence", top right is detail master photo etched mesh with it's octagonal holes, and in front you see the tamiya mesh.

Id say use the stock wing from the street kit. I think it flows with the huge fender flares better. You do sick work! The engine bay looks great!

Great idea with the hood and engine bay (parts) from the stock kit. Why not cut the front of the street car's chassis and replace the race car's chassis, and solve your problems fitting the I6? Looks great regardless. A well done race-to-street is always a treat!

originally i was going to go the same route as him with fitting a 2jz into the sard race chassis ... but now that i have a spare street supra i am really considering just cutting the front portion from the street supra and putting it on the sard chassis.
only difference is that my sard race chassis is under the street body, so my front pins would line up perfectly, in his case, since he is still retaining the sard body, the alignment of the street chassis up front would take some modification to get to close up and mate with the inside of the front bumper b/c the sard pins plug in a lot higher than the street supra, so at the end of the day getting the engine to work with the chassis might be a lot faster and simpler than getting the front clip to work with the body..
if that makes any sense to you :)
i guess it'll be more clearer to see once i post pics of the progress on my sard (race to street) conversion.
great progress man, like i said i love the hood, although i do agree that a mesh with thinner holes would look just a LITTLE bit more nicer, but the way it is is already more than good enough :)

hey man just wondering, have you fitted the engine yet? i had to grind down the top portion of the tranny (either that or the tranny tunnel, i chose the tranny) in order to get it fitted at the right height in the engine bay. the way it sits now it will sit WAYYY too low.

Yeah Ive been looking at that too. From the top it looks like it sits low but if you look at it from the bottom, especially if you compair it with the way the SARD motor sits in, it almost looks level. Im waiting till I have the full engine and engine bay fully mocked up and then make the changes needed. If I do make the adjustments, I also will be taking it out of the top portion of the tranny.
And as for the rest of you.....
Just another quick update from my work bench. Not too much to show off today, as most of you know very well, scratch building tends to be very time consuming.
The following pictures are of what I have been working on the past few days.....

Finished up scratch building a new turbo manifold for the 2JZ. I wanted to go from the twin turbos to one BIG turbo. :evillol: Made the manifold out of solder and evergreen. I also had to modify the turbo a little so that the intake for the exhaust turbine was facing the other way for better clearance.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2539/3905032390_9d55144eb8.jpg
I also scratch built a muffler for the exhaust. Its made out of three different diameters of aluminum tubing. Its a little hard to tell in the pictures, but I beveled the inside edge of the exhaust tip to give it a nicer profile.

And for these last set of pictures are to show off my new wing for the car. I think it complements the car very nicely and I like it a lot better the other ones I was thinking of.
Well that's it for now, as always, thanks for following along. I look forward to any and all comments that you may have.

also dont forget that you will need to scratch build a portion of the firewall to fill in the empty space under the windshield. i think thats why it might be looking like its sitting good b/c the firewall is really low right now.
i filed down the top portion of the tranny just about half way down to get it to tuck into the tranny tunnel and sit just about right.
good luck on the build man, cant wait to see more pics and how it turns out

Yes they are 20's. I went with them because the SARD body has larger wheel arches then the stock body. The 20's do a better job of filling them out.
Hello all,
Well as promised, here is the intake plenum and manifold that I promised. I have been working on it for the past couple of days and I just finished it up. Its made from various types of Evergreen, sprue, and plaster. I also stole the throttle body off of the kits stock plenum. Hope you guys like it, Im really pleased with it.

Not really feeling the Fast and Furious ricer wing. The Supra has such a nice rear, the wing really kills it. The rest looks good though.

Hello to all,
Well I figured that I should give you guys an update since you havent heard from me in a bit. :frown: Though this will be a tiny update.

I also got myself a resin battery for it.

Still trying to decide if I should mount it in the factory location, or if I want to mount it in the cabin. Depending how full the engine bay will be, will determine where it will go.
And finally I NEED HELP DECIDING!!!
I spent A LOT of time fitting the dash out of the street Supra into the SARD (though I may end up redoing some of it cause Im not happy with the results :banghead: ).
What I am having a hard time deciding on is if I should use the center console or not.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2563/4041984190_88b47c5cfd.jpg
If I use the center console then I will use the stock shifter and fabricate the drift hand brake to mount behind the console with a handle that reaches up over it.

If I dont use the console then I will fabricate a shifter that looks the way one looks without the console and still fabricate a drift hand brake.
Let me know what you all think, maybe that will help in deciding which way to go.
Thanks,

Do you have an air conditioner compressor to fit on the motor? If so, then by all means use that stock dash, otherwise, the race dash would suit the build better. But you did say it was a street car...well sort of. Street cars usually have a dashboard.

Hello chaps,
Another quicky from my work bench! :naughty:
Not to much exciting to say, I've been working on finishing up the engine mods as well as playing with the suspension.
I spent a lot of time on getting the wheels to fit properly because the Gram Lights have a much more negative offset then the wheels that came for the SARD. :banghead: So with sucking in 3mm in the rear and 2mm in the front, of wheel, I was able to fit and sort out the rest of the suspension.
But today I thought that I would share with you a couple of quick snap shots of the final mock up of the engine before paint.
I did some more work to it, to get it ready. All the taps where made for oil and fuel lines. I also scratched a fuel pressure gauge and mounted it on to the back end of the fuel rail. As you can see the front of the cam cover was opened up as well, it will be to show off some cam gears! :evillol: I also thickened up the stock radiator and reshaped it a little to make it look more like an aftermarket performance one. As for the intake horn on the turbo, I'm not sure if I am going to keep it or try and find something else. The problem is that its smaller then what I was hoping for, so to me it doesn't look to good. :angryfire

]Hey everyone,
Well I know that it has been some time since my last update. I'm stuck at the very slow part of any build, the painting. So with that taking a long time I thought that I would share with you guys a bit of a teaser, just to show you that I havent forgotten about you.
Though you should know that all of these pieces are not quite finished just yet. They all still need some more paint detailing and washes to make them complete. So if something doesnt look complete, thats cause its not.
Hope you enjoy........
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2719/4187142150_ef5238414c.jpg
Here is a collection of some engine parts that I have done so far. Items include main drive pulley set, turbo, fan, battery, intake assembly, turbo manifold, modified radiator, and a scratch built oil filler cap.:icon16:

Here is a close up of the intake assembly.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2631/4186385689_a22de4ef07.jpg
And a better look at the turbo. I am especially proud of the fact I was able to pull off the purple anodize for the turbo horn.:grinyes:

And finally the cage was painted up as well.
Well that all you get today, like I said this is just a teaser. I have a lot more items painted up, but are not complete yet. Hopefully everything will look as good as I would like them to.
I will update again once I have more completed.

Ok so another sneak peak at whats happening on my bench.
I finished up all the body work that I had planned. I originally had more planned, but the more I had thought about it the more I liked the idea of keeping it simple. The whole less is more idea. Anyways, I went ahead and filled in all the areas that were for the tow hooks, racing fuel filler hole, kill switches, and antenna hole. I also widened the exhaust cut out to fit the muffler as well as smoothed out the body by removing the body rivets and made the removable rear quarter panels blended into the body to make it look whole.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4050/4289929090_b106dcea20.jpg
Due to the rear hatch having a lip on the end of it, it kept the GT wing from sitting flush on the hatch. So I made some "ramps" so that I can mount the wing on flush.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4030/4289920644_9f5bf5ceb2.jpg

Well there you have it, not much but you get the idea. The engine is almost finished and the front and rear suspension assemblies are all finished, as well as many more odds and ends.
Now all that's left is to finish up painting and the final assembly. And as soon as this bit of English weather that we have been having all week lifts up I can get right on that.

Stunning......absolutely gorgeous work Bob.
Did you use All clad to paint the shiny bits, intake (looks awesome), exhaust, pullys...? Then Tamiya clear colours over the top...?
And the purple anodising......THAT looks freakin' amazing...What's the tip there..
cheers mate

@Greg: Thanks buddy! Yes you are correct, it is Alclad Polished Aluminum. You are also correct in that the throttle body and pulleys are Alclad with Tamiya's Clear Blue over it.
Now as for the Purple, that's where the tricky part starts. I started with the same Alclad. Then I put my compressor and brush on low settings and in VERY thin layers I applied Model Masters Purple Pearl. The layers have to be thin to keep the Alclad shinning through with out applying too much paint. Once that is finished, on the same settings as before, I applied SUPER thin layers of Model Masters Hot Pink Pearl. Only build up enough to where the pearl in the pink reflects back, but without applying so much that it changes the color of the purple. It doesnt show as well in photograph as it does in person but the effect is quite realistic. And let me tell you, there were many many many test pieces before I found the correct color and combination that worked.
Hope that this made sense, if not let me know and I will try to explain better.
I like the progress. Turbo looks fantastic. But with all the detail your doing, why not cut the pullies out and use a belt material?
Honestly I didnt even think of that. Perhaps on the next build I will give that a try. Thanks for the advise.

this project is looking very good, I stole your anodizing Idea for my supra project and am pretty happy with the way it came out. if only my car was hks themed then I could try the purple out, well theres always the next build.
keep up the good work I'm using your build for inspiration to finish mine.

@Steve: Thanks man! I am glad that I can be a source of inspiration for you. Though you seem to be doing just fine on your own! :iceslolan
Good to hear that your anodizing worked out well, and I will be keeping an eye out for that HKS build. :naughty:

Well here is what most likely will be my last update.
I still have a ton of detailing to do, and some last minute scratch that I decided on. :runaround:
But with all that, Im looking at finishing this weekend.
