Help with paint peeling

Hi,
I was painting the base of the side mirrors of my NB and then when I removed the masking I got this, I couldnt believe it since I was using the Tamiya tape and always remove them carefully.

Now what? Do I have to paint the whole body again or maybe only that spot? What do you guys think?

The body was sprayed with 3 coats of automotive paint (metallic).

Did you use primer or spray the colour straight onto the bare plastic..?? If straight onto the plastic you need to use an appropriate primer before your colour coats or this will happen everytime. The paint won't stick to bare plastic too well, but it sticks to the primer just fine.

Did u use primer? This happened to me before, usually happens on an edge. Since its not too bad, i would sand down that area (mainly just that part of the a-pillar). Tape off the area, around three to four mm away. if you still have primer underneath then proceed with the base (green). If the primer is sanded away or u didn't use it, spray one or two coats of primer then grreen.


You can also strip the whole model and start from scratch, i think this would just be idiotic a the chip(problem) is very small.

oh man, i feel your pain. It's happened to me quite a few times especially on those pillars.

If the primer's gone with the paint, it's going to be a hard task painting it back to the same thickness as the surrounding. Best way i found is to sand the pillar (from say the bonnett to side mirrors) back to primer/ plastic and start over clean.

I use 3m tapes so I don't believe its a tape problem. I believe the base area were contaminated by oily fingers etc. Instead of tapes, i use aluminum foil to cover with scrotch tape touching as little area as it is secure.

Yes, I did use primer, but maybe I didnt sand it correctly or like you say the surface was oily because of my fingers or something else, that is the only explanation I´ve could find yet.

So, I will sand down the area and re-paint it, hope that the primer still there. I will post the results.

It´s not finished yet, anyway, I guess this is better than stripping the body and repeat the whole process... :banghead:

I think after sanding it down smooth then adding a final paint layer, no one would ever have known you had a problem there. Good job. In my opinion, you'd have to be either a really pedantic person to want to strip the whole body for such a minor problem....or crazy :)
