Engine Noise

I have a 99 Alero 2.4 with 101k on it. I replaced the power steering pump and pressure hose about 5k ago. There is a noise that sounds like the car is going to take off again, but only when driving. I have checked the hubs and those all seem ok. The noise sounds like it is coming from the power steering pump again, but it has not lost any fluid and the lines do not have air in them from what I can see. Does anybody have any idea what could be the problem?

A power steering pump will make noise while the car is stationary and turning steering lock to lock. If the noise is there while moving only and starting at a certain speed and gets worse then most likely a noisey hub wheel bearing. Common problem with Aleros and Grand Ams.

What is the best way to check the hubs? Can you check them manually or do you need to get the car scanned with the ABS scanner?

One sign of a bad hub and or hub sensor is the 3 lights on the dash coming on, also you will hear a growl from the bearing that will get worse over time. It will most likely be the one that makes a louder noise when you turn and put pressure on it, although if the inside of the race of the other bearing is bad then that statement is not so true lol. Then you'll be replacing 2 bearings! I would drive the car and listen out the window, then get a buddy to drive it and list out the other window. Sometimes its hard to figure it out. Good luck, I think if your dash lights came on a real good scanner will tell you which one threw the code.

My front driver's tire has quite a bit of play in it when I checked it. The tire wobbles back and forth. Is there a procedure out here that shows how to do it. I have a good idea how to do it, I just want to make sure it is as I suspect. Thanks.

I replaced my hub today and was wondering if the anti-lock and trac-off lights will reset themselves or do you have to have someone with a scanner clear them.
