Hey everyone...
First time poster here. I just purchased a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.1 (V6) today. Love the car!! The security light on the dash is flashing. I worked it into the deal to take it to my mechanic to have it looked at and the dealer I bought from said they would fix anything mechanical on the car that was found.
I read a recent post about the security lights blinking and that it could be the passlock ignition cylinder/theft deterrent module that needs to be replaced. I have heard from different places that it costs anywhere from $200 to $600 to replace these things. I can probably get the dealer to replace it, but if I can't, does anyone know about how much it would cost to have my mechanic disable the system. And if the system were disabled, would there be any negative consequences to the car, other than not having an active theft deterrent system?
Thanks to any/all who respond.:runaround:

Try a different Key first off, or see if the dealership will throw a tech 2 on it to try and reprogram the current key to work.
I think there is a way to disable it, problem is that makes your car a sitting duck for any auto boosters.

Welcome to AF and congratulations.
You do not have GM Passlock but GM Passkey III (PK3) so make you get the right immobilizer key.
If this is an isolated incident and not constant then try the key relearn procedure first.

Thanks to those that read this post and responded.
I took the car back today and rescinded the contract. It was a very bad day. Took the car to my mechanic who said that there was $3600.00 worth of mechanical repairs the car needed. Brakes, struts, radiator...and a few other things. Not to mention the security light issue.
I took it back and they tried to hang me on the contract. I asked them if they could just get me into another vehicle. They said that they thought they should just end the "relationship" with me because it would just happen again. I said "why, because you sell mechanically unsound cars to people?", and he actually said yes.
They wanted me to sign something saying that I rescinded the contract, but I told them I wanted them to reimburse my down payment, reimburse the $40.00 worth of gas I put in it, and reimburse the money I spent at the mechanic getting the car looked at. The sales manager then disappeared into the back office and I guess went out the back door because I saw him outside....he had another key to the car I bought...they told me there was only one. He drove off with the car and parked it in the back of the lot and pulled another car behind it so I couldn't take it.
Anyway, ultimately, I called the police because they wouldn't let me get my stuff out of it. It was messy.
So, I don't have the car anymore and I am eventually going to get fired from my job when I can't get there because I have no car.
This isn't a pitty call, so don't bother replying.
