I have just bought a 98 cherokee limited 4.0 with 100,XXX miles on it. It has two problems. First, it never starts on the first crank when it has been sitting for a couple of hours. It will start on first crank it it has been started in the last hour or so. second problem.....the temp guage will shoot up to the orange but not into the orange everyonce and a while. the check guage light comes on and then within a few seconds, it goes back to 215 on the temp guage. any ideas would help. thanks

Starting: click to "on" and wait for the fuel pump to cut off. Mine does the same thing sometimes, and this should fix it.

Cooling: IMO, it sounds like your thermostat is opening slowly or late....try taking it out and running it without the thermostat for a day or so, and see if that solves the problem.

i am going to change the thermostat tonight and see if that helps. There were no codes when I checked. As far as the starting problem, I got the battery and the alternator checked, and both are fine. I am leaning towards fuel pump maybe? turning the key and letting the fuel pump prime, but that doesnt help. let me know what you think

I think their is a check valve to hold pressure if it leaks back the system has to get up to pressure.
Its cheaper to live with it until you need a new pump.
