Crankshaft Position Sensor Replacement

I am trying to read up and get ready to tackle replacing the CPS this weekend and after reading the procedure and old threads had a couple questions.

1. Is using an air wrench likely to remove the bolt from the harmonic balancer? I have read online of instances where an impact wrench still couldn't get the job done.

2. My next question is about the reinstallation of the crankshaft balancer. I believe the procedure says to "Tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt to 150 Nm (111 ft. lbs.) . Use the J36660-A in order to rotate the bolt an additional 76 degrees ." How do you do that without securing the flywheel? Or do you guys just zip the bolt back on there with an impact wrench and not worry about the torque.

The good procedure found in our old threads in history works. I've used it to replace mine. See link.

So you used the starter method with no problem?

The procedure doesn't talk about reinstallation. Did you do the 111 ft-lb + 76 deg thing or something else?

The proper torque for the crankshaft balancer bolt is 111 lb-ft plus 76 degrees. You should have no problems with the install as the balancer will snug up just right on the end of the crankshaft. However, I would use a new balancer bolt. Good luck!

Thanks for the help. I got the new crankshaft position sensor installed yesterday. I also could not get the bolt off with an impact wrench. But a good hard pull with a breaker bar and a pipe for a cheater extension got it free. The harder part was reinstallation of the bolt. I was easily able to tighten the bolt to the 111 ft-lb. I then marked the balancer with a permanent marker at 2 corners of the bolt which is 60 degrees. Again using the breaker bar I could only budge the bolt another 40 degrees using my arms. Since I was in my garage I was able to brace my back against the freezer and using my foot pushed on the breaker bar to rotate the bolt to approximately 76 deg. I also had to remove the flywheel inspection cover and clamp the flywheel plate with vise grips to keep it from rotating. I definitely had to exert more effort to tighten the bolt per spec than I did to remove it. I'm glad that's done. Thanks again.
