I'm looking at an '87 rx-7 with a rebuilt '88 j-spec engine and transmission in it. I was just wanting to know what the differences between a J-spec and a regular US 13B turbo are.

I'm not familiar with the different distinction;s between the jdm and usdm version, they are the same I think but the jdm was surely more powerful then the usdm version then again every car from japan is powerful. :D well maybe not I'm not sure.

I finally found out the differences, but thanks for the help anyways. The J-spec's are generally built more solid, and thus redline at 8,000 instead of 7,000. Also, about the number of models; I'm not sure about the number of japanese models, but i believe there were 5 US models for most 2nd gen's. SE, GXL, GTU, Convertible, and the glorious Turbo II. There were others for a few model years such as the luxury coupe and the 10th anniversery edition.

yeah, its pretty crazy. I have no idea what the differences are, other than the convert, N/A coupe, and the turbo coupe. I guess it was just different options, although the GTU's had a different rear diff, i believe 3.90 vs. 4.10. They decided to simplify things for the third gen's, which is why there was only one model, with the optional touring package.

There is also a very rare GTUs and the luxury coupe is the same thing as the GXL
