If it's all computer controlled there is little you can do except for general maintenance. Like air filter, spark plug gap, compression test, good oil, stp complete fuel system cleaner, etc. Make sure your automatic transmission has all gears, shifts where supposed to and locks the torque converter around or above 30mph. If the valve body is hanging up that can also seriously rob power. Not having a whole lot of power when running AC may be on the normal side as well. Refrideration unit robs a ton of power. Exhaust restriction can also rob power. Lastly, if the damper isn't secure and/or has a worn key, that can rob power as well.

The Escort isn't made for power, it is made for efficiency. There isn't anything you can do that will make it worth the expense to add a few HP.
I suggested to someone else awhile back to just drop an LS2 in there. That would be one of the easiest and most significant ways to add power :)
