05 Corolla trouble starting

I am the owner of a 2005 Toyota Corolla CE with almost 100,000 miles on it. I have owned the car for its last 25,000 miles (about 1 1/2 years) and it has been a very reliable vehicle. It runs excellent and the only things that have been replaced have been normal stuff like oil, tires, and filters. However, since the very beginning it has always acted funny in certain situations. If the car has been driven for a period of time, turned off for a while, and then attempted to restart it struggles to start again. The starter turns over strong, but there is no spark or ignition to get the engine going. This can be simply solved by turning the key/ignition into the ON position without turning it over, leaving it in this position for about 5 seconds, and then turning the key/ignition over. If I do that it starts just fine. Also, in the winter time this procedure is required whether or not the car has been driven recently or not. It's as if something has to pressurize or heat up before the car will start. I have never had it NOT start at all, but about 50% of the time I have to do it as I mentioned above. Does anybody have similar issues or any suggestions as to what it could be?

Sounds like your ignition switch is failing.

Have someone test the fuel pressure when the engine is off and after it is started. Also, have someone pinch off a section of the rubber fuel return line to see if the pressure loss is from the regulator or the pump. If the fuel pump, fuel filter, or pressure regulator is going bad, then it may take more than one turn of the ignition key to pressurize the system enough for it to start. Hope this helps!

Thanks, I will check those things, but it's not that it requires several turn-overs to get the car started. Actually, if you keep turning it over it might not start at all. This works every time, turn the key into the on position for 3 seconds or so without turning it over, and then turn it over (starts every time summer or winter). So I think it might go back to that pressure idea your talking about, but it doesn't seem like anything is failing. It has been doing this for the entire two years that I've owned it, but has always started. It's almost as if it was made that way.
