Can't Read 2006 ODB II Codes

Did ODB II change in 2006? Tried to read codes on a 2006 Ford Tauras and it only comes back with an error. I have an Innova 3100 code scanner that I've used years. It will scan codes 1996 and up. Do I have to buy another scanner to scan codes on a 2006 car?

No need to purchase another scanner. All scan tools should work on all OBDII systems. Have you checked all fuses to see if there may be one blown? If the fuse is blown, the tool will not communicate.

You might need to verify that your scanner is CAN protocol compatible, and if not, then find out if your 2006 Ford uses the CAN protocol, I suspect it does. I'm not positive this would prevent you from being able to review generic codes though.

Good point Rod. I forgot about that. The CAN protocol came in 2005. You can not read generic codes without a scan tool that is CAN enabled. Thanks Rod for the kick in the pants.

Thank you for the reply. I will check to see if the Ford has the CAN protocol and get back to you.
