Broken Shifter / Hand Break

Sunfire 2002 sedan

I can Engage the hand break, and move the shifter Forward (i.e. drive to neutral) without pressing the button on either of them. This happened suddenly when I was playing around with the hand break one day..

Did a spring break or something?

Note: I do have to press the button to Disengage handbreak, or move shifter Backwards.

How do I fix it?

Apparently I assumed too much... It appears there are no grooves for the shifter to catch on, and is Intended to move forward without release.
