Transmission level

Hello all, I have a 02 Protégé and I just pulled the transmission pan and changed the filter and as much fluid as I can. The owner’s manual states the transmission is filled with approximately 7.5 Qts but I know that I did not get that much out.
The real question is, when checking the level I am so confused about how to do it. It has two levels on the dip stick, a 20 degree “C” (bottom portion of the stick) and a 65 degree “C” (top portion of the stick). The manual states that you check it with the engine and normal operating temp, (which I know), and that the level should be at the full mark on the 65degree side. Well, its not.
I first put in the fluid after draining and filled it to the 20degree level as the manual states for an engine that is not running (cold side). After doing what the manual is stating, I started the car and went through the gears and let it run for about 5 minutes and check the level. Well, the level was barely on the bottom of the dipstick. I turned off the car and let it set and the level was then back up to the full mark on the 20degree side. Confused, I filled it more to the 65degree level and started it, the dipstick now reads just above the 20degree line. I let it sit longer at idle and the level never went above the add mark for the 65degree side.
I let it sit a day and my daughter drove it (without me telling her not to before I was satisfied with the level) and when she came back the level was at the same area as when I filled it to the 65degree level.
Do I need to remove the fluid to the full mark of the 20degree area or what do I do.
Thanks in advance and sorry for the confusion if I did confuse someone.

The 20c mark would be a good place to get it to cold. After you get it to that point, drive it for 10-15 mins and get the transmission nice and warm. Then it should be near the 65c mark. If it is close, don't worry about it too much, but don't go over the 65c mark when warm.

The car should be idling when you check your fluid. You can only drain about half the fluid when you do a change. This is normal since you can only drain the sump. The reason you need to change the fluid as often as you do is because the new fluid is mixed with old fluid.
