I've had a 95 Blazer, an 2000 Explorer, and now a 2003 Explorer. The Blazer was tough and had limited options. I wan't afraid to get her dirty. The V6 wasn't good enough to tow much but it was good off-road. I like the design and the room that the Explorer offers, but I also like the dependability of the Blazer. My 2000 Explorer had a V6. Too weak to tow much. Too pretty to get dirty. This time around I looked for the V8 Eddie Bauer edition for it's tow package and power. Still to pretty, but I love all the feature (heated seats and mirrors, all power, tow pkg.)

2000 Explorer: 1 engine and 1 transmision replaced with less than 50K mies on it. Motor was covered under warranty. Tranny went out 2K miles after warranty. Ford sold me a deeply discounted extended warranty to cover the cost.

2003 Explorer: I've only had this for a month and just found out the rear end needs replacing. Not sure if the engine or transmission have been replaced. All three are common replacement items.

1995 Blazer: Dependable. Normal items replaced like heater core, starter, water pump at 110K miles.

All the vehicles you want all have poor reliability and even with a v6 they all have poor MPG. If your want a SUV that gives you all your looking for (Space,Looks,MPG,Reliability) go with a 2003 or newer 4Runner. Here's a link.

People will tell you that one is better than the other all the time. It's not the make and model or the statistics that tell you what is more dependable. Your car will last as long as you take care of it.

My brother had a 1992 GMC Jimmy/Chevy Blazer 4X2 and it lasted to 212,000 miles. He traded it for a gas saver, but the Jimmy looked and ran like new. I've got a 1995 Ford Explorer 4X4 and it looks and runs like it's brand new with 230,000 miles. People don't believe me when I tell them it's a 1995. My friend has a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4X4 with over 150,000 miles and it runs great. It's got a little rust around the wheel well, but it's still in good shape.

I don't know about my friends Jeep, but I do know my Explorer and my brother Jimmy has had all schedualed maintence. My Explorer get synthetic blend of oil every 5,000 miles. Other than brakes and tires, I've never replaced anything but a blower for the A/C, an alternator, and a belt. My brothers Jimmy had to have a belt replaced a belt and alternator.

Just check the car over very good to see evidence it was well taken care of. Buy what ever you feel better driving and what looks and runs the best.
