This is an 89 Civic with 145K miles, autotrans. It started out as an acceleration problem hesitating a little but has gotten much worse. It idles OK but once it shifts into third gear it will start to hesitate sputter and die. (Very dangerous on the freeway !). Then it is real hard to start back up again. I kind of think its fuel related but you guys are the experts. Tonite on my way home from work it stalled 5 times mostly when going up a hill. I've checked most of the posts for this type of problem but none seem to fit. Any ideas will be appreciated.

it could be you distributor. start your car let it run till it dies. make sure it doesn't run out of fuel. if you think its safe drive it till it dies. then take the number one plug out and check for spark if there is none its your distributor. if there is spark then i would say fuel. cant say until you reply back. let m e know if this helps

well, as far as i have learned from extensive reading, because of my restoration of my 91 civic, you have 2 seperate issues:
1. hesitation during driving and stalling is ignitor related
2. no starts is main relay module.
ignitor is inside the distributor.
main relay is hidden under the dash trim, next to your left knee. i replaced mine today, $45 shucks. took about 20 minutes and some cussing.

btw, no need to remove hood latch. just pry plastic trim away and you can undo the 10mm bolt that holds relay in place and take it out easy.
