Have a 1996 Explorer, dome light will not shut off, anyone have any ideas as to what the problem might be,

look inside the door jam...there is a small plunger there that controls the light, if it's broken off the light wont shut off. that6 sounds like the problem, if a wire was grounded out the light would never come on...

Spray some WD-40 in the locking mechanism in the door.
Soak it good, and open and close the door repeatedly.
Light should go out.
Also check your rheostat (vertical thumbwheel by your headlamp switch)
make sure that it isn't turned on..(All the way up)
if the WD 40 does the trick, then it was your door ajar switch sticking closed. this is the input for the dome lamp. If neither of those work,
reply and let me know & I will try to help you further.

Good Luck!!

For what it is worth, I think the door switches are the new reed type switches and are all enclosed inside the body, therefore I don't think there is anywhere to spray WD-40. (I am not trying to undermine the other advice you were given - just trying to help)

I also have 96 explorer - my dome lights stay on intermitently. I fix mine by going around and opening and slamming the doors shut. It is usually the tailgate that is the culprit.

By the way is there a switch on the any of the domelight positions that might be turned on?

Good luck / Let me know if this helped / Mike
