sudden low idle

So i come out of work tonight and start my car. It idles at like 400rpm for a few seconds and stalls. Try it again and give it a little gas, but when i let off it goes back down to 400 or so and eventually stalls. Luckily i have my multi-tool in the glove compartment so i dial up the idle screw until it's idling back up at around 800-850-ish...which was a good 4 turns or so. Seems to run just fine and idles nice and smooth on the drive home. It smells and smokes...but i suppose i can attribute this to my recent cat and pre-cat delete, right?
Anyone know what could have happened? My car got rained on today at work for the first time in a while...maybe water got into something??? Also, when i got home and shut the car off it made a rapid ticking sound for a second afterwards...sounded like it was coming from near the throttlebody.
PLZ HELP MEH! :runaround:
This is still my only car so i wanna get it fixed before i get stranded somewhere or cant make it to work, lol

well then that freaking sucks...i thought that would cause it to idle inconsistantly? My idle is steady as a rock...
Anyways, how much should i expect to pay for one of them?

Tomorrow it might idle at 2500, or it might stall.
You can probaly get one for $40 on ebay. DSM IAC's are the same too.

i dont understand how they get any business at all. everything they have is way too expensive. they are a last resort for me, and only on things that i just CANT find anywhere else. like those crazy easy-install dash vents that save you the trouble of dash teardown. as soon as PMP gets those i'm done with 3sx

i browse on there to see whats available. When i find what i want then i start shopping. I have yet to buy a single thing from them.
EDIT:
bingo. brand new OEM IAC for less than half what 3sx is charging

Yeah, 3SX is stupidly high price. Like Stealthee said, you can get them around $40-$50 on ebay or possibly cheaper on a partout on 3si.

yea but with something like this I would rather spend a bit extra on a new one. No sense replacing one thats crapped out with one that's about to crap out...

The IAC went out on my car 6 years ago. I know it was 6 years because I joined 3si when it died because I had no clue what was wrong.
I bought a used IAC from a member 6 years ago and still have that exact same one in my car to this day.

Alright, got the new IAC in today and it runs like a champ. But on the old ISC there was alot of carbon, like it was in the exhaust. It this normal? or should i be worried...
Also, what is the black thing bolted on the front of the throttle body? what does it do?
I removed it before realizing that it was adjustable and noting its position.

My 94 is doing the same thing. It will idle just fine when starting be after a few minutes it drops down to around 400 and holds steady. It hasn't died on me but it is really close. Do you know if there is a way to check the IAC? I don't think that is my problem I am thinking I have a bad vacuum leak somewhere. Any help would be great.
Thanks,
Thanks,

You can test it while on the car.
All you need is a multimeter.
Test the continuity across the pins. There will be six pins, 3 in each row.
123
456
Test continuity across pins 1 and 2, pins 2 and 3, pins 4 and 5, and pins 5 and 6.
Continuity should be around 28-33 ohms if its an old style beige ISC.
If you get no continuity between any two pins then the ISC is shot.
If you find out yours is bad you can get one at rockauto.com for $72.79

I think this is the first time I've posted that here, but I keep it handy since it comes up often. Good luck and be sure to post up the results.
