The car was running fine last night, except I noticed the A/C was blowing warm, I checked and the compressor was working, but this morning when I tried to start the car nothing ? no clicks no dead battery, I noticed the secuirty light blinking on the dash header , I dont believe I ever saw that blink before, I tried to reset alarm with the remote, horn beeps once sometimes when pushing remote button , and doors lock, unlock, as well as trunk release and panic button work. I bought a new battery for the remote, I discounted the battery , and I look for any brokken wires didnt see any , I also checked all the fuses, does anyone know to to correct this problem? the key seems ok it has that chip in it

thanks

Do you have a spare key to try; if not, clean the resistor with a Q-tip & alcohol, or use a pencil eraser. You must wait 4-min between each attempt if the security light flashes. The second most common problem in the Passkey system is pinched wires in the key recognition circuit, usually caused by reassembling the steering column improperly after some other type of repair. In addition, a heavy load swinging on the key ring has been known to cause this type of problem.

Thanks I will try to clean the key, I also notice as I bought this car used that the stering wheel seems to have been replaced looks like they repair the rear of car and replaced the steering wheel for airbag , and my wife does have a few keys on the ring, how would I check for the crip wires ? what color? Lastly do I have any other options if this doesnt work?
thanks again

You can remove the panel under the dash and look for a pair of yellow or orange wires coming from the steering column and leading to a connector a short distance away. Do not confuse the ignition wires with the air bag wires! Usually, the two wires will be enclosed in a plastic tube. Once you find the right wires or connector, unplug the connector and with the key in the ignition, measure the resistance at the wires leading from the steering column. The reading should match that of the chip in your key. While the reading might match while the key is in the off position, it will probably change when the key is turned forward. If this happens, the problem is in the key recognition circuit, or the wires leading to it. At this point there are two options: Buy a new ignition cylinder and have a new key made for about a hundred dollars, or bypass the system for less than a dollar. We will discuss the bypass procedure later if the other suggestions do not work.

Thank You, it looks like I will have to do the bypass, I am going to check and see if I can locate the correct wires. I will let you know, But I have two problems one is I do not own a sodder iron, the second is I have no way to measure the resisitance in the key, so could I bring the key to a radio shack and could they measure it and then hook me up wih the correct resistor? or do I have other options?

Thank You

I took the planel down from under the dash, and I see only one group of wires, they are all wire tied together, they all about the same size which looks like about a 14 gauge wire. I do not see two small white yellow or orange wires in a tube. I had a thought that maybe this cars key has already been bypassed when they replaced the steering wheel?
or maybe I am just looking in the wrong place, its kinda hard to see under there?

there is a nice thing on u tube just type in gm bypass and it will walk you through it radio shack will have all your needs a freind had is system fixed it cost him 500$ a solidering iron and a pac of resistors is cheaper than that i did one on my sisters bonniville took all of a hour the wire was located on the left side of stearing colume

Some good info can be found by Clicking Here (http://vats.likeabigdog.com/) but before doing the bypass, be sure you are not getting 12V to the purple wire on the starter solenoid while attempting to start. If you have 12V on the purple wire & the starter does not engage, you have a bad solenoid or starter. You will need some basic troubleshooting skills & tools before you proceed with any of these suggestions!
