ac compressor oil

Could someone please tell me how much oil goes in a new ac compressor on a 1999 Vet. Thanks

That is a bad question to answer unless the entire system has been cleaned. But it is around 2-4 ounces if it has not been drained of all oil. If you are not cleaning the system (recommended if you had a compressor burn out) just make sure that you save the old oil from the pump as you disassemble it, Then drain the pump, all the oil out that you can catch into a cup that you can either weigh or measure.
( most cars take 6-10 ounces but I am including SUVs)

Then replace that much, And just a tad more!


To much oil will not harm an automotive A/C system….. it will however insulate the coils so that it will not cool worth a darn. The big problem in A/C is not enough refrigerant that carries the oil around, and not enough oil.


Not enough oil or refrigerant…. Smoked compressor and crud throughout the system. To much oil…….. no cold air! To much refrigerant…….. you will pop the over pressure switch and not get any cold air either.
