Driving tips

:lol2:Hey I was looking around other forums, this one included, and haven't really been able to find any driving tips...
What I mean is, i'm getting more into tuning my car for the track(there is one about 20 mins from where I live, $15 and you can race all night, you get time slips, ect.) And I was hoping there would be information about how I might be able to further profect my driving skill...launching and that sort of thing...
If there isnt such a list, perhaps maybe a few of you, if you find the time, could chime in with various tips and strategies that might help me on my way...
I'm looking a decent 1/8 time for my 97 rs...
Thanks!

With FWD the launch is important to not spin. I would first try launching at about 3000 rpm. If it slips go lower, if it hooks increase by 500 rpm and try again. Personally
Shift out of 1st 6800-7000 second 7200rpm third 6500-7000 depending on how hard its pulling up top then ride out 4th.
for an 8th you can just ride third.
If it is the car in your sig I would say getting an 8s pass would be awesome. But likely 9's or 10's.

Thanks, thats what i was looking for...
So, i can keep playing with it until i reach a point where i slip, then stay under that? Or is there an rpm limit as to how high i shouldnt go over launching...
And how would you launch differently, on an awd platform...ive got an awd eclipse sitting beside my house without an engine right now lol...so for future reference...
And thanks man!

Your car is going to spin all the way threw first and possibly second depending on the track and how much power you putting down. Let you front tires down to about 20-25psi. I just rev the car a little bit and slip the clutch out off the line. Do this quickly but not fast enough to bog the car or spin the tires. From here on its about throttle control. If you just floor it in first you will burn the tires all the way threw first and get a shitty 60' time. The first 60' are where you make or break you time. A shitty launch will kill your whole run. I dont take first up to 7k, I get out of it as fast as I can and push second as hard as I can before it starts to break loose. From there you just run out the rest of the gears till the end of the track. A good launch will be around 2.2s. And I would think mid 9s would be a decent time.

So, the difficult part, really comes down to how well you have mastered going through 1st and 2nd...
I appreciate everyones help...see ive never had anyone actually teach me HOW TO do all of this, ive only gone off of what i learned by myself, which is why i was curious if there was something maybe im doing wrong...and instead of asking a dozen questions i was wodneirng if there was a tutorial of some kind...
but you both answered what i was asking very well so,
ill try to re read these advices and apply them next time i have a chance to get out on the road(i live outside of town, middle of nowhere, perfect place to practice launches)
Thanks!:lol2:

yes about the slippage. don't worry about an rpm limit.
AWD is different. For AWD you want to find a rpm that you can launch from that won't self destruct your drivetrain. Because it grabs so much better you can launch from a higher rpm without worrying about wheelspin. Unfortunatley this means that the stress on the rest of the system is increased. So you gotta find a happy medium where you aren't going to explode everything but is still high enough to make good power. I like 5500rpm stutterbox.

My stutterbox is set at 4500k and that is enough to make you skeet in your pants!! I couldn't imagine what 5500 will do for ya.

Its essentially a rev limiter that engages when you aren't moving so that you can go WOT on the line and it holds your desired rpm value so you can launch under load (boost) and with a wot

ok,
*noob question alert*
What is a stutterbox?
It allows you to floor the pedal and only let the rpms go up to a certain set point. So say you're at the track ready to go on the line. You floor it, rpms go to your set point say 4000rpm, and just stay there, and they tend to bounce.

So, you rev wot, with the clutch in, and then when you let off the clutch you just take off? And it stops working when u take off right? like your not limited to only 4k rpm in first? ok, 2 more questions come to mind:
1)where can you buy this(never even seen one)
2)how is it hooked up

oh and yes it stop working as soon as you start moving.
You can get it in a lot of places most engine management programs come with one or other ecu flashes and addons
depends on the one you got
mine is through dsmlink. There was nothing to hook up execpt a clutch cut wire. Took me 5 minutes.

Also, will using the stutterbox feature, cause any major stress on your drive line? like will it stress the trans?:eek7:

A 4500 rpm studderbox launch is an amazing feeling, I couldn't imagine what 5500 rpms feels like (referring to Steve's launch in that video)

Ya mine's set at 4750 scared the shit out my gf first time i did it.
Another little trick i read somewhere is to go through all the gears before you get to the line it helps line up the synchros and hopefully help prevent a missed shift.
