Clutch Slave Replacement - How Much?

Just had the clutch master cylinder replaced in an attempt to fix a clutch problem - lose DOT 3 slowly resulting in a softening of the clutch pedal and inability to change gears. The master was apparently leaking. It was now know whether the slave was leaking - not worth the cost of dropping the transfer case and bell housing to get at the slave cylinder that resides within the bell housing ( 93 Wranger 6 cylinder ). As you may be aware the slave cylinder was moved to outside the bell housing with the 94 Jeep model. Ten minutes out of the shop I'm getting the soft clutch pedal again and noticed the loss of about an ounce of DOT 3 in the master cylinder.

Question - what kind of an effort and cost should I expect to drop the transfer case and bell housing and replace the slave cylinder? I'm hearing 5.5 hours...approaching $600. How can I tell if I need a new clutch also?

I would get a few estimates from independent shops.
Otherwise 4 jack stands, a floor jack basic hand tools and someone to help you.
I would install a new clutch,pressure plate and throw out bearing if your paying. Otherwise look at it if its worn replace it.

I found a local shop that replaced the throwout bearing, the disc and the pressure plate - $500. I jeep 'specialaty' shop wanted $850. I didn't go near a Jeep dealer - the cost would have been out of sight!!!! The difficulty with the '93 is that the hydraulic throwout bearing is inside the dame bell housing...so the trans and transfer case had to be dropped. Even though the disc was relatively in good shape I had it replaced along with the pressure plate. The throwout bearing was bad - leaking DOT 3 like crazy. Beginning with '94, the slave is external ato the bell housing so I could have done this myself for $100 or so.

First of all it's a hydraulic clutch release bearing -Throw out was a model T shade tree mechanic term that referred to releasing the clutch with the hand brake lever and like freeze out plugs instead of core plugs ( to get the core sand out of the block casting)
Hope you changed the pilot bearing also. A worn pilot bearing may cause a whining sound if dry and worn enough (it's the trans input shaft end chattering in it). Another thing would be to have the flywheel checked and ground if need be. A worn surface will shorten the life of a clutch disc considerably
