smoke at start-up

My Rav smokes at start-up. 117,000 miles on it. At first it seemed like it was spuratic, now it seems to do so most o the time. Are these things bad about valve guides?

I was told that the valve valley in the head may be sludged up, not letting the oil drain back as fast as it should, letting it slip past the valves at shut-off.

Anyone have this experience?

No personnal experience but I'll agree it's a classic sign of worn valve guide seals.

i have a 1997 157,000 miles on it and it was smoke at start up so i change the gromets that are in the valve cover which goes around the spark plugs and the problem stop.. hope this helps
