Starting issues sometime

I have a 94 limited Explorer. 6 months ago had starting issues so had starter replaced.Starting issues have returned but not so bad as before.

Symptom: turn the key to start and you get "click".....
You can leave the key in the "on" position and try again and get "Click"....
Leave the key "on" again and then it fires right up..
Mix and match this scenario becuase sometimes you can go two starts without an issue. other times you have to try 6 times.

I replaced the starter Solenoid switch on the firewall and the ignition switch. Thought that it may be a neutral saftely switch thing becuase one time it sat for starting issues and later found out the gear wasnt all the way up in park.

at a loss for what to check. I think its getting volts to the starter becuase you always get the "Click"

Can you tell if the click you are getting is from the starter solenoid or if it's muffled like just a small relay click? If you think it's the starter solenoid, then the problem wouldn't be with the ignition switch or the neutral safety switch. Either of those would open up the circuit prior to the starter solenoid. Since it's a single click, I don't think it's a dirty/loose connection at the battery or a weak battery. It sounds to me like you probably have a failing starter motor.

The click is pretty loud. Not like a relay click. its actually more of a "Clack" if that makes sense. I was thinking the same thing but I was hoping that it wasnt that becuase I just got the starter replaced a few months ago. I didn;t do it myself so I have to go through the hassle of drop off and waiting in the waiting room.

Sounds to me like a starter. The "clack" is probably the solenoid closing which should provide power to the starter motor.
