torque specs

rebuilding 98 k1500 with 5.7l. notice my chilton manual shows different torque specs then what the machineshop/engine builder told me. he gave me straight torque specs but the manual shows 96 and later use a torque turn method. should i trust the engine rebuilder or the chilton manual, ive found the chilton manual to be wrong before. if i do torque turn method do i need to replace head bolts and rod bolts? does anybody know for sure on the 98? thanks.

The torque specs in the manual are not always up to date and are for the use of new bolts and hardware. It is always a good practice to use new hardware due to the bolts being strectehed during the torque process. Using them over will have a loss in clamp load. If you had machine work by an engine builder then I would listen to him, especially if he is going to stand behind his work.
NEW bolts and hardware always recommended.

The chevrolet shop manual says to replace all head bolts as they are stress bolts . specs. show to tighten all bolts in sequence to 22 ft./lb.
tighten the short bolts an additional 55 degress , the medium length
bolts an additional 65 degrees and the long bolts an additional 75 degrees . hope this helps .
