Yep, thats what i had in mind. Or a similar process as to what they do when making easter eggs, in two spherical halves then joining them.

Heres how to calculate it............ aaaaahhhhhh the power of the web!!

The volume V for any sphere with radius r is equal to four-thirds times the product of PI and the cube of the radius. The area A of any sphere with radius r is equal to 4(PI) times the square of the radius.

Volume Formula: V = (4/3)(PI)r3

Area Formula: A = 4(PI)r2

Right, heres the start of your box. Now go buy your 8ft x 4ft MDF board and mark and cut as follows. Theres gonna be a lot of waste, but you can always keep it for something else later. Make sure you get 18mm thick MDF.

P11GT
12-15-2001, 10:34 PM
heres what you do with the bottom section you cut out. This is for the side panel......

Let me know when you get thus far, then i'll take you thru the rest. Keep in mind that the diagram below shows you how your box will fit together.

is Strong Spray Glue and Contact Adhesive the same thing? what does Silicone Sealer look like? is it that actual sticky silicone? i put that on all edges on the inside? ill start getting all the materials, but ill be gone in a couple of days to go to France for like 3 weeks, im going to try to get a little done before i go, but thanks for the designs :D oh ya, how high/low grit of sandpaper should i use?

P11GT
12-16-2001, 09:33 AM
Yeah, spray glue and contact adhesive are the same thing, i just use it from a spray can cos its easier to apply. Silicone sealer is what you'd use around windows, or your bath tub, just get either clear or white sealer, it doesnt matter cos it wont be seen. If you can, use a hand saw to cut the wood, a jigsaw sometimes will not cut too straight, but best to get someone with a cutting bench to do it, cos you need a perfect 90 degree angle on the edges, aswell as the edges being straight and true. This is because youre using a 'butt joint'

cool i just got my 4X8 MDF today, i had the hardware store cut it for me. they did all the 90 degree cuts, i just have to do the side pieces and the partition. i just got a hand plainer. just as good. im going to start working tommorrow. i bought 1.5 inch self taping screws, the head is about 1/2 inch though. you think that will be ok? its just the head, the rest of the screw is small. how long did it take you to finish yours? on side D, when you said screw the screws in at an angle, do you mean going up (sides E, F, and G)? or do you mean across screwing the screws on an angle to side C? if i did go across screwing the screws angled from side D to C, the screws would show a little. just need to clear that up. :D

what steps am i missing?

P11GT
12-18-2001, 06:29 AM
The main thing is, that the side panels are recessed in from the edge by a quarter of an inch, this has been taken into consideration when i designed it. This recess servers a purpose when it comes to finishing off the box, and allows carpet to be covered seamlessly. Ive got some pics and need to give you a discription, so i'll try catch you on Messenger tonite, just sign in, and wait for me there.

AznVirus
12-18-2001, 02:37 PM
what do you recessed? do you mean it sticks over the edge? dont worry i only glued the bottom and back panel together so far. i shaved the side panels so they would fit flush on the bottom and side, but there is a small tiny gap still. ok cool ill meet you tonight. if you dont see me on, just post pics. thanks :D

P11GT
12-18-2001, 05:05 PM
First of, you dont glue the sides, you need to drill and screw them or its not gonna stay in place. Recessing the sides is as follow..........

if you look at the picture below, the panel going from center to right of pic is one of the side panels, the panel its attached to is either A, B, or C. Notice how its not met right at the edge but is sitting back quarter of an inch. This is the recess youre gonna need to do.

I think you'll agree that is a piece of art, considering this is his first DIY box, hes done extremely well, i could even pass as being bought. To see his project in full, click the link under his sig, and click current projects.

Weldone there Deric!! You da man!!!

If you wanna make your own box like he has, give me a shout, i'll be glad to help.

thanks for the gracious words Kevin :D now i just need my own car! :p if anyone would like to make their own box, go to Kevin, he knows what hes doing. its only for a small fee (check the thread "Offering My Services: Custom Designed Sub Box"), but trust me, its better than paying $200-300 for a custom box.
