Gas Guzzler problem

I'm in Japan, but it's my dad's car in the states. 91 Escort GT DOHC 1.8L
He says its eating up gas like crazy. Replaced the relay and fuel pump. Problem still there. I don't know any more details than that. Any help would be great.

Could need a tune-up. Could be a bad 02 sensor. I've had 02 sensors go out before and my mileage would usually drop about 25-35%. Could be a vacuum leak. Could be a bad MAP sensor. Could be a brake dragging or a bad wheel bearing not letting the wheels roll freely. Ask him if the check engine light is on if it is have the codes checked, that should help narrow it down. These were just a few things that came to mind right away that could be the problem.

There's a fuel pump relay somewhere. I don't know where it is on the GT's, but on the standard Escort it is mounted to the ECU bracket. There are two relays that mount to the ECU bracket on the standard Escort, a green/black one that is the fuel pump relay and a brown/black one that is the EEC relay. Sounds like there's a possiblility the relay is stuck. Don't know this for a fact, just a suggestion.

Could be just a bad fuel pressure regulator.

I'd like to know how many miles on the car, ATX or manual transmission, actual gas mileage, and driving habits.

It could be a combination of things. Low tire pressure, excessive toe-in or toe-out, brakes dragging, dirty air filter element, dirty oxygen sensor, coolant temp sensor to the PCM, defective MAF sensor, worn out plugs and wires, excessive fuel pressure, worn out injectors, low cylinder compression, ignition or valve timing retarded and slipping clutch if it is a manual or a slipping torque converter due to low fluid level in an automatic.

Ya... there are too many possibilities here. You would have to provide more specific information if you are going to get any useful info.
Just to throw another one out there- it could be a plugged cat converter. You say a relay was replaced... was that before or after the fuel pump staying on? Is it still staying on after the relay was replaced? Which relay was replaced?
