The 2.4 Quad-4 has about 35 more HP and requires "minimal" modifications.
The Ecotec has about 30 more HP (but due to it's lighter aluminum block, makes for a quicker car) and requires an entire donor car to pull the engine, trans, PCM, BCM(?), and entire wiring harness to make everything work. Probably better to sell your car and buy one with an Ecotec in it already.
Of the two, I would say Ecotec just because of how much better the car handles without the heavy cast iron block of the Quad-4. There are also more performance things available for the Ecotec, if that matters to you.
