Looks good, the windscreen looks a little cloudy, but otherwise should be a good kit.

Thanks for posting this, Alex. :)
Looks good to me!
The fact that there will be an engine is great news.

Dear Alex,
Thanks for sharing this info with us. It seems to be a good product from the "panzers" of Revell OG.
Do you plan to build one? if so, once issued, can't wait to see your realization, that surely will be a masterpiece like all of your Ferrari.
We want to see a jewel like your Challenge Stradale! :sunglasse

One day, I will surely buy and build this one, or if maybe another company releases a better kit, I will built it. But I almost never build new kits because I simply have no time and there is always something else that needs to be finished first... So, no ETA, but one day!

Funny, I just checked the website a couple days ago for California updates, but there wasn't any. Until now! Looks good. I'm sure it will build up nicely like the 612. Did notice, though, that release pushed back to October.

Those molded exhausts really scare me and the engine isn't correct.
Probably end up buying multiple of each version though! :D:D:D:D:D

Yeah, the engine manifold cover is a little heavy handed, but at least its not completely wrong.
The California is available with 3 or 4 type of wheels. Wish Revell would have made a different set of wheels for the coupe and convertible versions.
Also, looks like Revell continues with its two-piece wheels...ugh. Why can't they put a little $ towards redesigning that aspect of their models??

I agree with you BVC500..I think that the solution of the 2 pcs wheels used by Revell is a shame..Surely it will be in this way.
The only one that have not this problem are the old Hasegawa (ROG reboxed) and the Revell coming from the Monogram world.
Honestly RevellOG lately is issuing some very interesting subjects (scaglietti,Fiorano, all the mustangs..) but WHEELS are ALWAYS:runaround: a drama!!!
We should explain to the Herr Doktoren some things..

The Audi R10 kit didn't have 2 part rims.
I also remember that Revell stated something along the lines that they will stop making those shity 2 part rims.

The pictures sure don't look like it has 2 piece rims, and if they are, so what? The wheels/tires look fine. I didn't like the idea on my Superamerica, but in reality the combination looks quite good on the model, and at least Revell did the proper wheels for the SA vs. Fujimi using the standard Maranello wheels which the vast majority of SA's did not have.

Maybe I'm wrong, but in a couple pics it looks like you can see white spokes behind the brake discs, hence the two-piece. In the end, it doesn't really matter, as the wheels won't look bad, and I'm very happy Revell is producing a model I want to build! :)

After looking at the product descriptions on Revell's site, which features a finished model (as opposed to test shots) it looks like we get two types of wheels, one design for the closed top and another for the open top. Nice touch!

EDIT: Also looks like it would really pay off reading these threads before commenting. Because now I've noticed that these two separate kits have been mentioned quite a few times already.

Yeah, I know. How hard or expensive is it to create a removable top (like Tamiya's one-piece for the SLK). Maybe Revell wants us to buy both kits.

I'm sure that's their reasoning.
I think the California is hideous. I'm not buying either version. I'll buy a Trabant before a California
I'll save my Ferrari kit $$ for a 458 Italia. That has to be coming out sometime. That car is so perfect it makes up for the atrocity known as the California

Well, unlike Bob, I'm getting the California, if nothing else, to paint it in a color that hides its big ass.
Otherwise, I'm waiting for the Fujimi announcement on the 458 as well. Sadly, I prefer it to Tamiya. Fujimi has come a long way in their kit designs. Who would have ever thought we get to this point? However, Tamiya needs to step up and give us something. The Nissan was nice, but was outdone by two other manufacturers. They can do it, but with what? I'm hoping they aren't sticking to one new automotive tool a year, or every other.

Sorry Chris, I've seen a black California in person. If that color can't hide the ugly, nothing can
Fujimi outdid Tamiya's GTR, but Aoshima...not so much. The Aoshima body is pretty clunky by comparison, tires are too small, yada yada. In a vacuum w/no other GTR's, it's quite acceptable. But sitting next to my Tamiya, it clearly appears inferior. A full engine option that came later doesn't improve upon it IMHO since the body is the weak link.
I'll be happy if Tamiya/Fujimi/Revell AG do the 458. I wouldn't be surprised if we see more than one...there just aren't that many exciting new cars anymore, this one's got the goods.

I think the car looks best from the factory in silver with these wheels:

I concur, although I do like the Azzuro California blue. I saw similar silver cars at Ferrari-Manhattan and on eBay. The one on eBay had a really cool red interior with silver-gray piping and stitching. Too bad we aren't getting those wheels!
EDIT: I saw some new 20inch Type D Hobby Design wheels on Ebay, and they seem very similar to the wheels on the silver Ferrari California in the pic above.

Am I the only one here who does like the look of the California? To begin with I didn't like the look of the large chunky front grille on recent Ferraris, but even that is growing on me now. Seriously, I think the California looks good, even the fat rear end.
As for the Revell kit...well, we know it will be widely available at a decent price and that when built it will look like a Ferrari California. The negatives I predict (for me) will be the 2-piece wheels, wooly & wobbly suspension parts fitment and a few difficult fitment issues here & there - probably most notably in the dashboard area.
I'm certainly not a Revell hater but I'll probably give this kit a miss. I'm not adverse to putting extra work into a kit and improving what's in the box but I'd also like to have the option to make a kit as a very simple and quick out of the box build. The Revell kits I've made were not as hassle-free as I would have liked them to be and I suspect this kit will be no different. Maybe I'll wait to see if Fujimi eventually make their own kit of this car. If they don't, I'll no doubt end up buying Revell!

I too like the looks, for the most part. I finally got over the side swish character line. On the rear quarter panel, it helps disguise the cut line for the trunk lid.
And I agree with you re: the two-piece wheels. However, while the Revell kits require a lot of clean up, once clean, they look pretty darn good. I enjoyed building my 612's. What I didn't like was warping issues, such as the hood and chassis.

I find the talk of Revell kits being warped interesting as I have never had a problem with any of their new kits.
Is it possible that the kits sold in the US aren't as "straight" as what we get in Europe?

The Revell 612 kit that BVC500 mentions is infamous for its warp issues :)
I think that majority (but not all) of the people I know who have built it have had problems with at least the hood and some with the chassis and tub also. I certainly did on both of my European made 612s.
The good news is they are relatively easy to fix.

Revell AG kits that are run for the US are actually molded in all-white plastic for the US; which is superior to the multicolor mess they seem to inflict on European buyers. My Revell AG 612 (Euro issue) had chassis warp issues. Knowing what to look for, it's pretty easy to rectify by the builder.
Problem w/the California, the designer (or whomever demanded the retractable HT) was warped. Can't fix what was baked in in the first place
