The rear valve cover gasket is leaking and I was told that you want to replace both because if the new gasket doesn't leak anymore the pressure will be transfered to the other side most likely causing it to leak if it's old. Sound advice?

I dont think replacing one is going to cause the other to leak, but I'd replace both. I'd be willing to bet your front one is leaking also.
Don't forget to replace the bolt grommits. They are included with the fel-pro set that is 45.00 at Oreilley's.

I just thought of something. Is there a certain material I should get or if I go to Autozone or Oreilley's and ask for the valve cover gaskets, will whatever they give me be sufficient? ( I would like to replace the old gaskets with something higher quality).

fel-pro brand from autozone or oreilley's. (far superior than GM)
Just clean up both surfaces, and put them in dry.

I agree go with the FelPro brand. They don't flatten out like the GM valve cover gaskets over a period of time.

WOW!!!
Oreilly's sold the gaskets and grommets for $50. Autozone sold the gaskets for $15 and the grommets for $9. Both FelPro rubber. Um.... :screwy:

strange! However, I myself might go with the spendy ones anyways just so I wouldnt have to do it over again.
is that 15.00 for a single gasket? and 9.00 for grommits for one valve cover? Or were they for both banks?

That's the total cost to service both covers.
