I have 2000 Malibu with 130k and a weird thing happening did some research and didnt see any posts about it, anyway the ignition works fine to start the car but when it comes time to shut it off that's where it begins. The top of the shifter is real loose and I noticed that you dont need the brake to put car into reverse etc. For some reason if you play with the shifter and brake and jiggle the key it will go to off position and come out, problem is key will go to accessory position and then stop. I noticed on the key itself brass is showing so I figured I would get a new key cut first since its probably the cheapest thing to do first, any suggestions.

I would suggest pulling the cover and checking for a stuck shift cable or solenoid in this area.

didnt think of that, thanks for the suggestion I 'm going to do that today. Is the solenoid a dealer item or can I buy that aftermarket.

You can always buy a junk yard item. Ask a parts store but I suspect a dealer item.
