sluggish acceleration

i have a 95 Rodeo, its an automatic V6, just yesterday at a red light i tried to accelerate from a complete stop and the vehicle was extremely sluggish and slow, it was the first time it has happened and i hadnt noticed any gradual decrease in power. Once i reach about 35mph it runs fine. i thought it might be the fuel filter, so i checked it(it needed replacing) so i slapped a new one on there but that still didn't help matters, the air filter doesnt need replacing. Could this just be a matter of it needing a good tune up, or could it have to do with the exhaust system maybe. I dont want to take it to a mechanic if I can help it, does anyone have any suggestions.
