Just purchased a what I call 58 bug
Vin is 2034534, build date 12 Aug 58
The previous owner had it titled as a 59 based on his previous owner's title
In my state due to age I don't have to title it and registered it as a 58 since the 59 start vin # is 2226206
Is this correct?
Thanks

A Bug built in August 1958 would be a 1958 model year. The 1959's would have been built beginning in September.

Vin #'s weren't tracked as much, back in the day, as they are today, especially when it came to the DATE of when the car sold at the dealership. It was probably titled as a 1959 because it was originally SOLD in 1959, although the build date was Aug 1958. And you gotta figure that the shipping and wait/inspection time through customs could take upwards of a few months as well.
Year/title mixups were more common than most folks think, especially before the 17-digit VIN number came to be in the 70's. If you have proof of the build date, I.E. a VWag birth certificate, you can usually have your the tag/title folks re-title it for you. Might take some hoop jumping though.
