Unfortinatly I've been missled by DieslePower (Sniff. I didn't know, he duped me on my first post here :P) so I continue my quest.

Can any one help me out with the names, URLs, or phone #s of any people who do conversions to meet EPA/DOT standards, as to whether or not they work on skylines I'll find that out, unless you know the answer already.

In the search for a low cost GT-R(you can import an r-32 for 13k), hence, not through motorex, i found exactly what i need to do, minus the 15-17k it'll cost me(including car mind you). Here are the URL's that contain a list of registered importers, AND the a list of cars that can be imported, modified, and then legally driven on the roads in America!

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/

This page, and all the links on it, will show you everything you need to acquire, and have modified, a skyline GT-R in the US. From everything i understand, you will NOT have to crash test these vehicles, all that will need to be done, is have the appropriate emissions control devices installed. Apparently, the GT-R HAS been tested to meet US Crash Test Saftey Standards, and is capable of being modified by people other than motorex. :D

Dammit...wheres my towel??

Does anyone have a specific list of what must be done to a Skyline to make it comply?

Geez, how many times do I have to post this. The page DOES NOT list what needs to be done to a Skyline for it to be approved by the DOT. If it is not modified in conjunction with what has been submitted in previous compliancing packages by Motorex - it has a high likelyhood of being DENIED. You are right, it does not have to be modified by Motorex - but they are the ONLY RI that will certify them. So if you modify it yourself - good luck finding an RI to certify it. Becuase by it being certified by an RI, it must conform if it is inspected by the DOT.

There is NO published list that documents all mods to the Skyline's for compliance - why? Becuase it is a trade secret that is protected by the US Gov't for the sake of Motorex. If you want to know what to do, either buy the info from Motorex - or you have to gather the data yourself. And how do you do that? I'll give you a hint - import 3, and don't ever plan on driving them again, becuase they will not look anything like a Skyline.

You are right - it is capable of being modified by other RI's, but unless they buy the required data from Motorex - it is my opinion that it will NOT pass DOT approval. It is listed on that page - as being CAPABLE of complying.

I guess I'll have to do it the hard way. Crash testing and all! Does it matter what model you use? Must it just be a Skyline? Must it be a GTR34 to sell GTR34? Thanks Shooter Boy

DieslePower,

As always, money is a problem but I have good credit and can get a loan for the car and as for the mods, I can get a credit building loan (I don't have to list a use for the money, it is just to build my credit as I pay it back, then take the money and spend it on whatever I need it for.
As for my parents, it doesn't realy matter because I don't live with my parents, I live in an apartment were I go to school.

I have however found what, in my opinion, is the best way for me to get a skyline. Enroll in collage at a collage in NZ after getting a 30K USD loan. Move there, live in a dorm (free room and food), get NZD for all my US loan money, buy a skyline then import it under the condition that I export it in one year. Now unless I have gotten some faulty info from some web sites, I do not have to go through all the BS if I move it out in a year. Or, just keep it in NZ untill I get enough money to have it converted and find a place to do it.

Oh btw, I don't know if these people only do AMC cars or not, I haven't talked to them yet, but I've found some specific info on conversions here http://www.teamamc.com/HOW_TO_IMPORT_A_VEHICLE13245.html
