Engine and Transmission Compatibility Issues

I have a 1999 Cavalier. 2.2L with 4 spd automatic. Is there a place or somewhere to look for the Compatibilty with different years. Will a 2001 thru 2005 fit?
What engine fits with SOME mods.
I am going to rebuild my engines but need to drop another in ASAP to get the car going. Any one know where to find compatibility guides?
Thanks.

Not past '02, starting in '02, the 2.2 OHV was discontinued and the only 2.2 was the Ecotec which is nowhere close to fitting without extensive mods. I think all the 2200's were the same, which were in production, I believe, from '98 to '01. I'm not sure about '02 production, I have seen parts for an Ecotec advertised for an '02, and I have also seen 2200 parts advertised. Possibly a mid-year switch, but again I'm not sure.

If you get the engine from a salvage yard, they have a list of the compatible years. Just double check it before you accept it, I needed to find an upper intake manifold for a 3100; there was a change in '00 that all 3 local yards didn't show. Wasted 3 hours trying to find the right one. That's the only problem I've ever had, but apparently their listings aren't perfect.

Also, would the PCM work for the same years? I am assuming it would except for the major model change you describe.

Your PCM will work with any engine that will work, but a PCM from another car of those years will only work if both have the same options, and you will need to reprogram the Passlock "code".

What is the Passlock code?

The ignition cylinder has a built in resistor, the PCM has to see the correct resistance, if it doesn't, it won't allow the fuel injectors to fire. This makes it take a bit over 30 minutes to hotwire the car to steal it, I guess GM figured someone would come along and call the cops in this time(?). To reset the code, try to start the engine. Release the key to 'on' and wait 10 minutes. The 'security' light will go off after about 10 minutes. When it does, turn the key to off, then back on, wait 10 min, off, on, wait 10 min, off, try to start. It should start this time. With DRL, you'll probaby want to disable the headlights or put the battery on a charger unless your battery is pretty good.
