blower motor trouble?

my old blower motor was making a horrible screeching sound so i baught a new one on rockauto.com, sadly those idiots manage to put the hole for the drain plug on the other side of the motor, i was wondering how important is the drain plug?
my questions is because when i turn on the heat the fan turns on for maybe 2 seconds then shuts off, i unplugged it and measured the voltage at the terminals and stays between 12-14 volts so i know the control module and resistors are all fine, if the drain hose isnt causing the motor to stop working can anyone help me figure this out.
Thank you

The drain hose should not cause an electrical issue with the blower motor but the drain hose helps get condensation (water) out to drain otherwise it just accumulates in the lower HVAC assembly and then may come into the cabin. What brand blower motor did you get?
Also, do you have the CJ2 dual zone ACC (automatic climate control) system or the manual?

What "drain hose" are you referring to, item #16 in the pic below? If so, that hose goes from the fan motor to the blower case and is used to help keep the motor cool. I don't think that is your problem! Back-probe the wires going to the motor, & monitor voltage when you turn the fan on. Don't assume the control module is fine; things can change when under load!

Interesting Bo. You think? Isn't it more like a vent tube which is probably worthless but I've heard of it as a cooling hose. :dunno: See pic. Also, FYI it can act as drain by allowing water from the lower HVAC enclosure directly into the blower motor housing which is a common problem on '97-'03 Grand Prixs due to leaking cowl seals, lower windshield leak or lack of a cabin air filter. Also, coolant if the heater core is leaking which happened to me.
BTW - If I have the heater on full blast and high or any setting/speed does that keep the blower motor cool? Wouldn't the hose feed hot air to the blower? Doesn't make sense to me. :grinno: Just food for thought.
Another common problem on Grand Prixs is getting the wrong blower motor since the one for the CJ2 ACC and manual systems are different in rating. There are two different blower motors for the 1998 model year.

the blower motor i baught is a "TYC GENERA" was for 38 bucks. i don't know what is acc system or manual but when i called rockauto they told me this motor is compatible with my car.

The generic blower may be your issue. That explains why the hole for the hose doesn't match up. Stick with the OE Delphi or AC Delco only new or used. It would be nice to know what climate control system you have. The ACC has the digital readout. The manual single or manual dual zone has no digital readout and the manual blower motor speed position knob positions 1-5.

Yeah Bob, the hose thing is probably worthless, since I have seen many blower motors mounted on the firewall (above the exhaust manifold) where the hose deteriorated and crumbled into pieces, but the motor lasted for years. The original intent was to provide air circulation to the motor, whether it is warm or cool. The logic behind this was, that it is better to have some type of air flow, than none.
I had a Chevy truck with the fan motor mounted inside the cabin at the lowest part of air box, similar to this design and as mentioned when the heater core fails, coolant fills the motor housing and takes the blower motor out with it. I agree, this particular motor location is a piss poor design, but makes it easy to change. :grinyes: BTW, I agree the OP must have the wrong blower for the system and of course, Rock Auto would say the motor is not the problem!

can anyone tell me what is the location for the ac resistor on a 2003 pontiac grand prix?

What type of heat/ac control head do you have. If it is digital(has a display for the temperature) it is a module. If it is manual you have a resistor that is located by the blower motor on the passenger side. The motor and the resistor are located behind the glove box.

well on mine it was right next to the blower motor, its under the dash on the passenger side. take out the kick panel and voila.
