I have an 82 Elcamino and im trying to find out if anyone might know where the build sheet would be located in the truck. As well as where I can find the gear ratio for the rear end with out pulling the cover and counting the teeth on the ring and pinion.

I have a 78 el camino and I found the build sheets behind the upper part of the door panels, there was 1 in each. They may also be found under the seat, or on top of the gas tank. As for the rear end gear ratio, I just went down to my local chevy dealer and gave him my VIN number and he looked up the information and gave it to me.

A quick way to find out the gear ratio in the rearend is fairly simple. Jack one rear tire off the ground, find something on the tire/wheel to use as a starting point (like the tire valve), face the valve straight down, or up, whichever you prefer...so long as you know where you started from, and spin the tire 2 complete revolutions. While you're spinning the tire, watch how many times the driveshaft spins (It might be a good idea to mark the driveshaft with chalk or something). Most likely your ElCamino will have a 2.73 to 1 ratio. If so the driveshaft will spin almost 2 and 3/4 turns (2.75). I had a '78 and an '84, both with auto transmissions, and both had that ratio. Yours also may have a 3.08 to 1 (slightly more than 3 spins of the driveshaft). Another possible ratio would be 3.42 (almost 3 and 1/2 turns). But if yours is an original automatic, it'll most likely be 2.73. Good Luck :)

Pulling the cover & changing the oil isn't a bad idea anyhow, The ratio numbers are stamped inside,, it gives the ring/pinion count so you have to divide, as a1 says they are disappointingly "highway" ratios for the most part

if you have the hood insulation still, there is one under there, one under the seat and one under the"cubby hole" carpeting, i found the last two exactly there and the original owner(my father) laminated the one underhood.
