Clutch/Trans Questions

'93 LX 1.9, 5 spd manual, 105K

The clutch was replaced about 20K ago (previous owner). This past winter in very cold weather I couldn't get it to shift. Shifts fine now, but as the clutch is almost fully depressed there's a mild clunk sound.

* I want to check the trans. fluid level and can't find the pressure sending switch that serves as the dipstick. Can someone send a photo or explain clearly? I *think* I see it as I look in from the front of the car, there's a sending switch front and center if I look straight down. It comes off the "silver part" (now I sound like an idiot!) that I *think* is the transaxle case. Am I right? (I do know it takes ATF)

* Any guesses on the slight clunk as the clutch disengages? Anything that can be lubed?

What you are seeing is the switch for the backup lights. It doesnt have anything to do with a pressure switch. To check the fluid level on a manual Escort you have to take the speedometer drive gear out. It's located on the bottom side of the speed sensor which is on top of the tranny underneath the battery. The proper level is to the top of the gear. It is low if it is below the bottom of the gear. It is hard to get out. One poor soul on the forum broke the drive gear off and it fell into the bottom of the tranny jamming the shifter rods. If your tranny isn't leaking I would suggest leaving it alone. Just a thought.

The clunk is a bad clutch release bearing or broken diaphragm fingers on the pressure plate.

Yes, sounds like a bad bearing. The previous owner probably replaced the clutch disc but no other parts.

I have a '94 model and you can adjust the clutch pedal's push rod to a longer length, which will in-turn push the hydraulic piston in further; possibly then allowing you to begin shifting, provided that the thing hasn't been run low on fluid.
