The sun shell in my 99 2dr tahoe snapped, so i removed my tranny and had it bebuilt. My truck was sittin in my garage for about a month and i finally got it back together this sunday. As soon as it started up the CEL came on. I drove it and it and it was running like it was in 2nd or 3rd the whole time, and after pulling the code (P0785) I understand its a shift/timing solenoid malfunction. Now two days in a row when I start it, it throws the code and is stuck in 3rd, then after I park and it for awhile and start it back up the light's still on but it shifts fine and feels like my old truck again. It was fine before the sun shell went. Should I jump straight to the ignintion or does anyone have any other ideas as to what it could be?

edit: Oh, and I don't have a remote starter or anything like that.

I pulled it yesterday and put it back in and then drove to the store. It was shifting fine before and after i unplugged and plugged it back in. This morning it did pretty much the same thing. Stuck in 3rd, but I could manually downshift to 2nd. I also didn't have OD. I got to work, turned off the truck and restarted it and all was fine. Was still fine at lunch also.

The connectors going to the neutral safety switch couldn't cause this could it? I ask because in order to disconnect them I had to heat them up with a hair dryer to get that wax or whatever to melt. And I had to heat them up again to put it back together. Could that wax be causing a break in the circuit?

Its been about a year since this problem arose, but due to a military deployment, i wasnt able to get it fixed until recently. I took it into a tranny shop and they narrowed it down to the connector at the solenoid. Truck's completely fixed now. Finally.
