wiper problem

Just picked up a 97 jetta with 72000 miles. Car is in good shape but has a few minor issues. I was wondering if someone could help. The wipers work on high and low, but when i pull down for intermit they dont work. They also dont work when i pull back for the fluid. Any ideas? oh and the only other thing that doesnt work is the auto door locks. Bad switch maybe? Dont know where to start on that.
