trans fluid fill question

Does anyone know the correct way to get the fluid level correct. I followed the direction from another site and it didnt work. I changed the filter and torque converter and put in 12 quarts of fuild in and drove it and then it said to leave engine running and let excess run out until slow steam. I did that and then it would not move. SO i put the 3.5 quarts back in and it moved again. Any thought's? thanks in advance

What model year and which transmission? The 5-speed auto doesn't have a dipstick or fill tube, and they claim it takes a special tool to fill the trans. Does your Explorer have a transmission cooler, and if so, is it stock or aftermarket? What type of fluid did you use and what does the owner's manual recommend?
