I have a 2001 Grand Prix with the 3.8L engine and the 8th Vin number being K. Recently the car has been having major power loss! It starts and idles great, but when you step on the gas even just a little it will spit sputter, sometimes even stall. I have in the past two days replaced the wires, plugs, fuel filter, two coils, crank posistion sensor! It still does the same thing, it also seem that after running it for like five minutes around the block the engine is extremley hot! Not according to the temp guage though. I have spent allot of money on this car in the past two days, and still have the same problem as when I started, please someone help me. Could it be the CAT?

Yes, good diagnosis!
Get it replaced before it melts down your UIM. :2cents:

Hey thanks, alot for responding so quick. Do you know what the factory warranty is on the CAT? What is the milage cut-off? If you had to take an educated guess how sure would you be that it is the CAT? Not saying you are wrong just that a new one is around $254...

I think on certain models the warrenty was extended to 120,000 miles. I know mine wasn't covered, but yours might be.
254 for a stocker ah? Throw a high flow in there from ZZP. They are right around 80 bucks if I remember right and do a good job.

Hey thanks allot. I hope that the dealership will fix it for me for nothing. If not I will do it myself, lol that is sometimes the best way too do things. With 15yrs of experience I kinda like doing it myself, wow sorry went off on a tangent...
Thanks again

Well I just disconected the cat from the manifold, and started the car and opened it to full throttle a couple of times. Before with the cat in place if you opened it full throttle it would bog down, it seems as though it may still be doing that. Before I removed the cat I was also getting a multiple cylinder misfire code P300, P301.... But how is that possible I have replaced the coils, the crank sensor.. I am getting really frustrated here!

A bad cat will cause all sorts of issues including no accelleration in gear, and random cylinder missfires.
I would advise to take it to the dealership and have them replace the Cat Converter if you have less tha 120,000 miles.
