Custom stand for spraying your car

I just wanna do alittle on my part and share with you my custom made stand.

All you need is about 4 clothe hangars and some wires to secure them and thats it.

It doesnt look good but it I think it helps does the job effectively and its cheap.

PIC1
Shows the full stand with 4 legs and a gripper which springs outward to help grip your car.

The hangar wires are very flexible so if you need to lower it or bend the car towards you, just bend the front 2 legs.
Same if you want the car to bend backwards, bend the hind 2 legs.

PIC2 and PIC3
The gripper.
Just press it inwards and put your car and release. The gripper will spring outward and hold on to the side of the car. If you must, put a masking tape to get a better hold on the inside of the car.

PIC3

PIC4
Showing the gripper holding firmly onto my Opel Holzer.

PIC5
The full view of the stand.

Important things to note is the gripper. As I said, use a masking tape but if you can use something else better, good for you :D

If you think you can improve on it, do share with us your ideas.

Since I am always 'stealing' ideas from you guys, lets just say this is a small 'payback' on my part hehe

Hey, this spider's not going anywhere and its very sturdy ;)

Anyways its April fool's day. If there some light entertainment along with this, so be it :D glad you guys are happy poking fun.

But I am curious to know, what you guys use to hold your cars when U wanna spray them?

sticking them on 3 wood thinggys (don't know the word for it at the moment:D),fix it on with masking tape on the inside, and stuck it into something that can hold it...:)

Great idea on using the clothe hanger.
I use 2 empty spray cans to hold the body for spraying, one to hold at the hood and another to hold at the trunk.

I sit the body on top of an empty spray can.:alien:

I use an old model rocket launching pad. I take the tripod and the small steel pole and a cap with some velcro on the top--for each angle i need to paint, I put a new piece of velcro on the piece and attach it to the tripod's velcrow. The launcher is adjustable too! It works greeeaaat!

i don't have a digi cam, but will show you when you drop by.
I use a 250ml Gunze thinner bottle with salt water inside and seal the cap. and a blue tack on the cap.:D

Sure Rtuned, 1 of these when we meet up, show me some of your 'gadgets' :D

Based on what you guys described I can only imagine but wont the height of the containers be too low?

And what about those who stay in flats? How you guys go about spraying?

Well, I think this isn't very custom, but it works very well. I believe that many of you use this, but I put the pic here anyway...

And that spider-custom-model-car-holder is VERY clever idea, but I think I stay in this spray-can-car-holder system:) :D

i got this silly ideal maybe if we can find a fan and a box + chain spray stand fix it together the fan will get the smell out and the stand will hold the car and the box will keep the paint for flying around the area

I use a block of wood with long swrews in it. By not swrewing them in too far, they can be pulled into the corners and hold it firmly. The weight of the wood means that it isn't gonna fall or get knocked over.

Ah u guys have pretty good ideas there!

Keep em posting, I am sure we have more pics of creative 'stands' out there.

Just reading these posts and pics, I have gathered some rough ideas for a new n better looking stand.

Perhaps, we can get our heads together and with more pics, I am sure we can come up with something better, cost effective so that everyone can make and use it.

And yeah, better looking than me spider stand hehe :sun:

I'm only using a spray can right now and I just stick my car to the top of the can using blu-tack and that is all.

Chain, how about you doing a stand like yours for me and I'll buy you dinner one day when I come collect it. Btw, you don't have to paint the stand...moi will do it myself. hehehehe...

This is the old "helping hands" alligator clips on a stand, great for holding a variety of parts.
http://www.infinite1der.org/~dino/holder1.JPG

I picked this up recently, it has 8 alligator clips made on to flexible steel cables connected to a sturdy, heavy base. Made to hold office notes etc.
http://www.infinite1der.org/~dino/holder2.JPG

I use this to hold the body, I don't like anything bulky or stationary, I like to be able to spin the body around as I spray it. This allows me to cover the body with paint quickly and effeciently while the paint is good and wet and will flow together minimizing orange peel. As you can see it has foam pads which press against the inside of the body, and is adjustable to different widths by turning the wingnut.
http://www.infinite1der.org/~dino/holder3.JPG

After the body is painted you can hang it upside down while still in the holder to keep dust from falling in the wet paint, or lay it on its side across something that doesn't allow the body to touch. These holders are available at www.micromark.com
http://www.infinite1der.org/~dino/holder5.JPG

Thought I would throw in a pic of my paint booth, the white pipe behind it goes up and out the outside wall so as to vent all overspray and fumes outside. The contraption on top is the food dehydrator(paint dryer).

i take a sprue (half an inch long at most), sand one end flat and weld it to the underside of either the roof, trunk, or hood. then using an alligator clip attached to an end of a wooden dowel, i clip it on the sprue i just glued on. this way i have complete control over the body with minimal interference from the painting jig. being that the sprue is welded in, i have the peace of mind that the body is going to stay on more securely than just jigs relying on interference fit only. when done, just clip the sprue. sometimes i use two or three sprues at different locations just so that i have additional leverage while painting.

i do this not only for the body but for small parts altogether. its particluarly useful for painting hoods. just glue the sprue on one of the pegs that are used to hold the hood onto the body. this way you get complete coverage of the hood with minimal touch up once done.

here is an example using veyron's photo with alligator clips:

ktan, nps man, come and get your stand when U r free. Will make another one easy.

Alot of great ideas so far!
Those simple spray booths are very good for people like me who live in flats and have limited space to spray.

My pics shows my bathroom.

Before I spray, I'll use my shower to spray my bathroom walls with water. Try not to use hot water as I think the small hot air that rises will affect your painting job.
Then I start spraying my car after which I shower away the paints from the walls with my shower again. Of course my car and stand must be taken away first.

I gathered from all the replies that to make an effective stand, you need:
1)Good base (my spider has 4 legs lol)
2)Good grip : The grip if done correctly with crisscrossing of the hangar wires will provide natural resistance to spring outwards for a better grip)
3)It must be easy to turn so that you can spray on the other side of yur car. (This spider of mine, I have to hold the centre of the stand to turn)
4)Height wise? Some websites do mentioned height is important. If your model is too low to the ground, floating or rising dust can affect your paint job. Sometimes if you spray, you'll find that some of your paint 'bounces' and floats around.
5)Flexibility. Makes your job of painting easier especially in small confined spaces where U find that you are the one who cant move to the other side of the model.

Do post more of your ideas and share them with us.

This is how I hold side mirrors while painting. I cut a toothpick in half, put the two halves in the clips, put a drop of Micro Krystal Klear(white glue) on the end of the toothpick. Then I put the mirror face down on the glue with pick and glue all fitting inside the mirror opening. After paint is dry, pull the mirror of the glue, it always sticks to the wood and not the mirror.

Good point, the clips aren't good for every application, but you can usually clip in a place on the part that will be unseen, like the lower edge of a seat. These are great for suspension parts where there are many inconspicuous attachment points.
