My daughter has 98 Jetta VR6 100k runs good except when reaches normal operating temp. Then it will stall, just as if you turned off the key. If try to restart, cranks but wont fire. Wait 2hrs and starts right up. Replaced the engine coolant temp sensor. No change. Car is 5spd. Only other electrical problem is when key is off there is battery drainage somewhere. At rear of engine there is a round multiple connector about 2-3 inches diameter. If this is disconnected the battery drainage stops. If reconnect, can feel what is like small motor or pump running somewhere near rear of head. Any ideas?

Question#1. Your egr valve needs replacement. Hot combustion gases not escaping chamber. Its a pricey part so shop around. http://www.car-stuff.com/mmparts/volkswagen-jetta/egr_valve.html
Note: You may also need to check entire exhaust system for repair. It's all related.

Ok, sounds reasonable, but where in the engine compartment is the egr (Kombi-Valve}? Is there a way to test it other than spending $300?
Thanks

If i recall it's mounted on the backside of the engine, above the exhaust manifold. If you can't find it you may have one of those models that does not have one even though parts says you do. Remember to have your exhaust fully checked out.

Hi...friend brought over a code reader today....code 16706 says
"ignition / distributor engine speed input circuit no signal"
any idea what that means??? Does it refer to the coil pack or the computer or a sensor of some sort???
Just for fun I erased the check engine code and started car cold...ran until reached 190 degrees then quit like before...as if key was turned off...check code reader again and just code 16706......
Any help appreciated...

As you see you can have multiple problems. In order to completely fix your vehicle i personally would take to VW dealer.

Thanks, this link says replaced engine speed sensor....where is this and why take it to vw dealer if this sensor is the only problem?

Just giving you options. Your speed sensor looks like this. http://partimages.genpt.com/partimages/101977.jpg
It is near the oil filter flange(trans side) on the block.

Well after a couple of tries, Rock Auto got me the correct part, the crank position sensor, and it fixed it! Starts, runs and stays running, even when up to normal temp. Even restarts when hot.....Thanks for the help.
