97 Mazda Protege - repairs/time for new car?

Hi everyone!
I don't know much about cars, and would really appreciate advice. I have a 97 Mazda Protege DX, 150,000 miles on it. I am hoping to squeeze another year or 2 out of it, I heard these cars are fine up to 200,000 miles.
However - my car failed emissions - both O2 sensors need to be replaced, as well as charcoal canister assembly. Mechanic estimate was $800. Some of this stuff I think I can fix myself, doesn't sound too difficult...but then other little things, like the airbag light will occasionally turn on...I am worried about putting much more money into my clunker, I do a lot of traveling and commuting.
If I could just get past emissions i would be ok, the car starts right up and drives like a champ!

Get one bosch generic O2 sensor ($60-70) and replace the front sensor. The rear doesn't do very much, only replace it if you still fail emissions. You can get a VAPOR canister for around $75 on ebay. Both replacements are DIY for a weekend mechanic.
