WS6 vs VR4
VR43000GT

Got done applying for a few jobs today and I see a white LS1 WS6 ahead of me getting off on the same exit as I am. Upon getting off the exit we both head west and sure enough catch a light that is on a street that is on a downward slope. I pull up next to him thinking maybe we'd go but he never showed any interest nor did I. The light finally goes green and I hear the monster from und the hood unleash as I quickly try and launch at a measely 3.2-3.3k rpms....grrr. He immediately gains a car on me as I try and play catchup which wasn't terribley easy still. He spins a little in 2nd with me starting to finally make up my ground and time I catch up he cuts off as I do for the fact we were going plenty fast for the road we were on which was a completely wide-open 4 lane road with no possibility of anyone turning in front of us. I gave hime the thumbs up and look over to him giving me the same thumbs up. It definately sounded like he had an exhaust as it was quite loud from idle. Aside from that, I really don't...maybe a lid? My modifications are in my signature.

Damn, AF has REALLY died since I joined here. I remember the good old days of posting a thread and having it be up to 2 or 3 pages by the next day. :dunno:

Yeah, I know. It's really sad and I'm not sure what happened.
Anyhow, nice kill man. That's a pretty hefty car to be taking down! :bigthumb:

Nice race... Have you had your car to the track?
Im gonna hit the track tomorrow. Ive added the cat back since the last time and Im gonna have the stock 16's on.
Im hoping for a low 13 and trap around 107ish...

Thanks polygon but I actually didn't beat him. I was unsure if we he was interested in racing and when the light went green I tried to make a swift catch up by feathering the clutch at somewhat lower rpms. I caught back up to him but as I did he shut down as did I.
I have not taken it to the track yet so I don't have any definative numbers right now. I know TwIzTeD_3kGt who used to be on here fairly often ran a 12.6 with a 1.7 60' with the same power adding mods as me except he had a single shot IPS exhaust attatched to his Stillen downpipe. Although, from what I have heard, when you get rid of all of your cats with a downpipe, changing the rest of your exhaust is pretty pointless until 400+hp as it is a pretty wide exhaust. 2.75" I believe at its narrowist.

not bad. af is pretty dead nowadays, as most people with racing stories get caught up and things afterwards.
no one wants to race the slow sentra, now that i put the new wheels on it. i would be a revving magnet with the snow tires, but nothing now.

Nicely done Sir.
I know... AF is slow. Maybe with spring/summer hitting we'll see an increase in car stuff?

Fixed. :)
The solid mounts and 6-puck clutch were the biggest factor in that run. They changed my car from a "low 13-second car that trapped 106 and could squeak out a 12.9 on occasion", to a "high 12-second car that traps 106 and can squeak out a mid 12 on a good launch". That and shifting like a mad man.
Nice run, haven't ran into any LS1's yet. Would like to though.

Sweet race tho, I tend to fall into those situations a lot myself, though I don't have a good car for it, but my shitty concord still has some balls lol A lot of people think I wont push the limits seeing as I'm female, but speed and cars is what I was born for. Wish I could have seen your little show, I bet you still rocked it.
Kinda sucks this site is dead, a friend recommended it to me so I only just joined. I'll spread the word though.

No one races at all anymore on the street. I remember when a little rev of the engine would make civics fall from the sky.

QFT.
Even if I go to the local meet up place, no one wants to race any more. Its dead. I can't even get a little tire squeek out of the worst Civic. Most people around here don't even bother racing, they just all dirve fast together.

Your just not going to the right places. Trust me on this, I wasn't either. Now I'm at this one spot every Saturday playing tag with the cops. Big shows, lots of cars, and lots of racing. We bounce between two places when the cops show up, it lasts all night.

Eh, I am not too worried about racing dying down on the street. I never go looking for races and have never even been to a scheduled race events. Frankly, it is dangerous which is one of the reasons I rarely do it because I only pick areas I know with absolutely no chance of other traffic having interference with us.

That's how the paces is that I go, absolutely NO street traffic other than other racers. It's kinda hidden, off on some old side road that only ever sees racers. No civi threat at all, no danger of running lights or crossroads where an accident could happen. It's why I like it, it's secluded.

Nice race man! My friend sid has a vr4 with intake, 3" turbo-back with a cutout like mine, ebc @14.5psi, and hefty clutch (dont know what kind) and he raced my friend with an ls1 camaro 6-speed with intake and cat-back from a 35 to about 100 or so and sid had about a car or so on him. Sweet race to witness for sure! Ever since sid finally took advice and got his car checked out and found out some if the injector seals were leaking its been a whole new beast since we fixed it. Im tuning the camaro soon so they may have to have a rematch afterwards to see how good i tune it!

Sometimes from reading this board, it makes me think that the VR4 outsold the Supra, Skyline, ZX300, FD, Corvette, and Mustang combined. More of you guys have VR4s or friends with them than the entirity of 3S.org. Damn...

Actually, I believe it was in 2000, Ford sold more Mustangs in that one year than the number of 3S's made in all 9 years on every trim level. The only reason I know so many people with 3S's is because I am on 3S boards both internationally and locally. On top of that, I live a fairly good-sized city so there are quite a few people around here that have them. But yes, we are #1 and always will be. :icon16:

Pssshht! While it is not as easy to work on as an old car with a V8, they aren't that terrible. If you take 5 minutes to remove some of the intercooler piping, you have a LOT more free space. Doing large jobs can be a PITA at time but overall it really isn't that bad. Take a look at the 300ZX TT's. Just to replace the turbos you have to pull the motor. Plus, we want it to be difficult to work on! Makes us better mechanics for it. :sarcasmsign:

And when you get the intake plenum off it makes it pretty easy to do plugs and injectors. The first time we had it off on the vr4 for the injectors it took us 4 or 5 hours from start to finish, but the second time for spark plugs we did it in under 2 hours. Not too bad after you've done it once.
VR43000GT
06-19-2009, 05:06 PM
First time I did the spark plugs it took me about 2 hours to do. In fact, you don't even have to completely remove the plenum. You just unbolt enough shit to where you can prop it up with a 2x6 board to get to the rear plugs. I would be willing to be that if I did it agian I could do it in a hour and a half or maybe less.
TorchedStealth
06-19-2009, 05:19 PM
You used a 2x6 eh? We used a piece of intercooler piping from a friends old 240 lol. We didnt take it off either, and it took us about 2 hours or so to do plugs, but when we did injectors it took us hella long because it was our first time and we were being cautious.
Another thing we did was undent the oil pan. Sounds pretty straight forward, but you have to take off some cross members or whatever and of course the transfer case. More work than one would think but it was actually a lot easier than i thought.

I have heard the rear plug/s on LS1's can be a real PITA to change as well. How do you get to the rear plug/s? Disconnect one of the motor mounts?

The 1,3,5,7 plugs were simple. Now the 2,4 plug were a little more difficult but I removed coil packs to get the rest of them. The number 6 plug was a bitch but the number 8 was impossible for me.
I barely got one arm back there but the guy that did it was able to get both his arms back there and got the old out and new in in like 5 minutes...

Sounds like it was on my buddy's old IS. Getting that number six plug, which for all intents and purposes was under the god damned dashboard, was fucking miserable.
Now he has a Tacoma, and we can't wait to work on that thing. Almost as much space as an FD engine bay.
